Job summary

Leidos in Pittsburgh, PA is seeking a Research Engineer to join the DOE NETL partnership, focusing on enhanced oil recovery from unconventional reservoirs. You will design and perform laboratory tests, lead rock and fluid characterization, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to translate lab results into field-scale insights.

This role emphasizes leadership in a multi‑disciplinary environment, advanced techniques (XRD, CT, SEM, NMR), and data analysis (Python/MATLAB).

Qualifications

Master’s degree in petroleum engineering or related scientific/engineering field with 6+ years of experience, or a PhD with 4+ years of experience.
Experience interpreting XRD, CT and SEM for mineral analysis.
Experience with interfacial science including contact angle measurements, interfacial tension and wettability alteration.
Experience using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance scanning for oil saturation mapping.
Ability to interpret complex experimental data with Python or MATLAB.
Experience leading a multi‑disciplinary research team.

Responsibilities

Lead rock characterization of oil saturation mapping, mineral analysis, porosity and permeability.
Lead fluid characterization including PVT, interfacial tension and additive evaluation.
Design and conduct lab tests to enhance oil/gas recovery from unconventional reservoirs.
Collaborate with reservoir modeling to integrate lab results with field models.
Evaluate fracture and proppant properties under varying stress.
Engage with industry experts and DOE partners to advance goals.
Review literature and document findings in reports and presentations.
Lead interdisciplinary teamwork across geology, geochemistry, and computer science.
