Job summary

Florida Department of Health in Polk County is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to perform regulatory inspections of storage tank systems and ensure compliance with Florida F.A.C. Chapters 62-761 and 62-762.

The role supports DEP contract requirements and requires meticulous documentation and field observations. The position also involves tracking violations, coordinating enforcement follow-ups, and conducting installation and closure inspections as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in physical, natural sciences or engineering with two years of professional environmental experience.
• Certification eligibility for Food Protection or OSTDS as per Florida Statutes 381.0101.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with annual 8-hour recertification.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine inspections of regulated storage tank systems to verify compliance.
• Review facility records and identify non-compliance items.
• Prepare standard inspection reports and correspondence within contract timelines.
• Track Significant Non-Compliance (SNC) items and pursue corrective action.
• Conduct installation and closure inspections as required by regulations.
• Provide on-site guidance to facility owner-operators and maintain documentation.
