Job summary

Northern Kentucky University is seeking an Environmental Specialist Intern to support restoration projects in northern Kentucky. Interns work with CER staff on field and office tasks, gaining leadership, management, and technical skills through hands-on assignments.

The role includes leading small invasive plant removal crews, conducting stream and macroinvertebrate assessments, preparing plans and monitoring reports, and presenting findings to regulatory personnel; ArcPro and ArcOnline

Qualifications

• No prior environmental restoration experience required.
• Must have reliable transportation to work in field and office.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work outside in all weather.
• Willing to work with herbicides and handle natural hazards.

Responsibilities

• Lead small invasive plant removal crews and record herbicide use.
• Perform stream and macroinvertebrate assessments.
• Conduct conservation easement inspections and erosion-control tasks.
• Prepare restoration plans and monitoring reports under CER supervision.
• Present findings to regulatory agency personnel for review.

Position Title:Environmental SpecialistPosition Type:Fixed Term (Fixed Term)About the Role:Interns work side-by-side with CER professional staff to complete environmental restoration projects within protected natural areas in northern Kentucky.Internships last for three months with the possibility of extensions up to one year. Opportunities available year-round. Internships may be part time or full time, have whole-day work days, and are one to five days per week. Training is provided and no prior environmental restoration experience is required.Requirements:ability to lift 50lbsability to work outside in all weather conditions, for long hoursreliable transportationwillingness to work with herbicidescomfort encountering poison ivy, ticks, and other natural hazardsThis internship is for new environmental professionals, entails office and fieldwork , and promotes leadership, management, and technical skill development. Field activities may include leading small invasive plant removal crews (which includes herbicide record-keeping), stream and macroinvertebrate assessments, conservation easement inspections, sediment and erosion control, and other conservation tasks. Many interns may learn to operate compact construction equipment such as Bobcat track loaders and excavators.Office activities include preparing plans and/or monitoring reports for restoration projects under the direction of CER staff, and co-presenting them to regulatory agency personnel for review and approval.
