Description

KLJ is seeking an Environmental Specialist Intern to support our environmental team in collecting, analyzing, and documenting environmental data across a variety of projects. Under direct supervision, this role assists with field surveys, environmental sampling, and technical documentation related to biological, physical, and earth sciences. Interns gain hands‑on experience supporting projects involving water resources, air emissions, pollution control, natural resources, and environmental compliance. This position provides exposure to both field and office work while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality environmental solutions.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with natural resource field surveys including vegetation surveys, wildlife observations, wetland delineations, and habitat assessments.
  • Collect and record field data using GPS units, mobile data collection applications, and field forms.
  • Support environmental desktop reviews and organize background information for regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with preparing technical report sections summarizing research findings, field observations, and environmental data.
  • Support equipment preparation, maintenance, and inventory for fieldwork activities.
  • Follow all company safety standards and site‑specific health and safety procedures.
  • Participate in training opportunities and cross‑disciplinary collaboration across KLJ teams when applicable.
  • Demonstrate responsible and ethical decision‑making while adhering to KLJ policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support project and business needs.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related life science field.
  • Familiarity with ecological systems, habitats, and environmental research methods.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental regulations, compliance practices, and documentation standards is beneficial.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to present ideas clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with guidance as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Experience with GIS software and GPS equipment is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and walk long distances across uneven terrain.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and stay overnight as required.
  • Basic familiarity with plant and wildlife identification is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required due to occasional travel to project sites.
Physical Requirements
  • Sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Use hands to handle tools or equipment and reach with hands and arms.
  • Communicate clearly through speaking and hearing.
Field Work May Require
  • Walking on uneven terrain for extended periods (up to 10 miles per day).
  • Frequently lifting up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Vision abilities including close vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment and Travel

This position typically works 40+ hours per week and includes a mix of office and field responsibilities. Work may involve approximately 5% office work and 85% fieldwork, with occasional travel to project sites depending on project needs.
