Environmental Services Technician

MAIN FUNCTION:

Performs various cleaning tasks following Environmental Services procedures and hospital policies. Responsibilities include collecting non-medical and medical waste, operating waste autoclave, labeling medical waste containers, collecting corrugated boxes, and maintaining floors and carpets. Responsible for linen distribution: stocking carts, delivering clean linen, and collecting soiled linen. Responds to house pages as assigned.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Environmental Services Director/Supervisor

MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS:

GENERAL FOR EVERYONE

• Occasionally lift up to and exceeding 50 pounds.
• Stand for prolonged periods.
• Flexible hours based on department needs.
• Continuous walking, grasping, reaching, with occasional bending, kneeling, and squatting.
• No disciplinary actions in the past 12 months.
• Eligible applicants aged 17 and older.

LINEN SPECIFIC

• High physical activity level required.
• Lifting/carrying laundry bags up to 25 pounds.
• Repetitive lifting and hoisting laundry onto carts.
• Pushing/pulling carts up to 850 pounds.
• Reaching into laundry tubs and transferring linen.

ATTRIBUTES:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Institutional cleaning and floor care experience
• Good customer service skills

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Scheduled weekends and holidays, every other weekend and holiday.
• Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or airborne pathogens; appropriate barriers worn.

POSITION EXPECTATIONS

• Maintain a safe environment and report unsafe conditions.
• Use appropriate cleaning products and techniques.
• Complete assignments timely.
• Clean units, make beds, spot clean walls and carpets, and restock supplies.
• Perform wet mopping, operate vacuum cleaners, and handle trash per procedures.
• Keep carts and tools clean and ready.
• Perform floor care duties: operate floor scrubber and burnisher, strip, wax, and burnish floors.
• Handle waste: transport to dumpsters, process bio-hazardous waste, operate autoclave sterilizer.
• Assist colleagues and report work activities.

RELIEF CHARGE DUTIES:

• Supervise staff in the absence of supervisor and charge technician.
• Distribute work and cover call-offs.
• Respond to house pages during day shift.

LINEN ROOM RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Train new employees on linen procedures.
• Deliver, stock, and handle linen and uniforms, including soiled linen pickup.
• Lift soiled linen bags up to 60 pounds and transport carts weighing over 850 pounds.
