Responsible for work in the operation of landfill equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Director.
- Inspect the different sites at the landfill for unacceptable waste and materials.
- Evaluate incoming customer loads and direct them to the proper sites. Identify unacceptable and/or illegal waste.
- Educate the public on the proper methods of waste segregation.
- Perform necessary tasks to maintain an orderly environment around the working face of the hill, scrap metal pile, waste tires, household hazardous waste facility, and the entire landfill property.
- Pick up, spots, and directs the placing of materials were indicated by Department of Environmental Protection rules and regulations governing landfill operations.
- Operation of a light truck. Operation of loader, bobcat, dump truck, and dozer. Occasionally operate equipment at landfill used for proper disposal of waste, such as compactor and scraper.
- Perform daily safety inspections of equipment prior to and after use; perform routine service and maintenance.
- Knowledge of procedures necessary to safely, skillfully, and economically operate a light truck.
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, limitations and safety precautions of landfill equipment.
- Ability and skill necessary to communicate effectively with the public as a representative of the County Landfill. Must be able to deal with the public in occasional adversarial situations.
- Ability to prepare written reports of daily activities and load inspections.
- Ability to operate equipment over rough terrain and to perform manual labor occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physical work related to the position.
- Ability to comprehend the classifications of waste loads.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to keep accurate daily time sheets.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to comprehend Federal and State Department of Environmental Protection rules and regulations concerning Solid Waste Disposal and Classification.
High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of equipment used at the landfill.
Special Qualifications:Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License. Ability to obtain a Sanitary Landfill Operator's Certificate and maintain certification as a spotter.
