DNREC in Delaware seeks an Environmental Scientist III to support field operations and coordination across science, engineering, and related teams. The role involves beach nourishment, dredging, debris removal, hazard mitigation, plus lead on permits, reports, and mapping.

Ideal candidates have GIS knowledge and ESRI GIS experience, plus 2+ years in data analysis, environmental law interpretation, and technical reporting. Telemwork options and alternative schedules are available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
• Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
• Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
• Two years' experience in technical report writing.

Responsibilities

• Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for permit and regulatory compliance; analyzes data and makes recommendations.
• Performs statistical analysis of data.
• Reviews permit applications to ensure regulatory compliance.

Introduction

The DNREC Shoreline and Waterway Management Section works to maintain and improve Delaware’s shorelines and waterways, as well as administering dam safety and floodplain management programs.

Summary Statement

The Shoreline and Waterway Management Section Field Operations Branch is hiring an Environmental Scientist III to support coordination among the Science and Engineering, Field Operations, and related teams. Operations include resource management tasks such as beach nourishment, dredging, marine debris removal and hazard mitigation. This is a hands-on fieldwork position that will lead communications, permits drafting and reviews, project management and mapping, equipment-compliance activities, grant oversight, and GIS application management.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

• One year experience in creating and editing geodatabase features and attributes using ESRI products.
• One year experience in operating outboard and inboard watercraft vessels.
• Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

• Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
• Performs statistical analysis of data.
• Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
• Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist IIIApplicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higherin Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
2. Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
3. Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
4. Two years' experience in technical report writing.
