Job summary

WithersRavenel is seeking an Environmental Scientist I to perform Phase I and II ESAs, field sampling, and data analysis in North Carolina. The role supports regulatory compliance and report preparation within a fast-paced consulting environment.

Ideal candidates have 1–3 years of ESA experience, strong writing skills, and the ability to travel for field assignments. A Bachelor's in Environmental Science or Geology is required, with a driving license and willingness to work outdoors year-round.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or related field.
• 1+ year of environmental fieldwork experience (internships, co-ops, or volunteer work valued).
• 1–3 years of experience conducting Phase I and Phase II ESAs.
• Knowledge of ASTM Phase I ESA standards and NCDEQ/USEPA requirements.
• Experience with soil and groundwater sampling techniques and monitoring equipment.
• Ability to address client requests promptly under PM direction.
• Valid driver's license with ability to pass MVR check.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills.
• Willingness to travel and stay overnight.

Responsibilities

• Perform Phase I ESAs, including site inspections, historical research, and regulatory reviews.
• Conduct Phase II ESAs with soil, groundwater, surface water, and vapor intrusion sampling; oversee subcontractor drilling.
• Calibrate and maintain field instruments and sampling equipment for data accuracy.
• Oversee and document remediation and mitigation activities as needed.
• Prepare and maintain field notes, chain-of-custody forms, and site photos.
• Travel to project sites as needed, including overnight stays.
• Analyze and interpret environmental data to support regulatory compliance.
• Prepare technical reports for Phase I/II ESA documentation and sampling summaries.
• Maintain accurate project records and documentation.
• Communicate with clients, regulators, and internal teams; assist PM with planning and coordination.
