Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking an Engineer III (NS) in the Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources. This Express Engineer III reviews erosion and sediment control permit applications and provides engineering guidance during inspections across four programs: Sedimentation Control, Stormwater, Dam Safety, and Mining.

The role requires walking rough terrain, working in adverse conditions, and statewide travel; a valid driver's license is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering; four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Responsibilities

• Reviews applications, completes timely and detailed reviews of engineering plan submittal.
• Ensures timely and detailed review of engineering drawing and specifications for compliance with federal and state laws, rules, and policies, and good engineering practices.
• Performs inspections of sites/facilities regulated under each of DEMLR’s four programs: Sedimentation Control, Stormwater, Dam Safety, and Mining.
• Advises and provides engineering guidance and written technical/compliance documentation to staff and clients.
• Meets with applicants and their consultants to facilitate project development, design, construction, and ultimately permit approval and site compliance.
• The duties of this position require travel statewide; overnight stays are possible.
• A valid driver's license is required.
