Job description

An employee in this classification is responsible for collecting, testing, and analyzing water and other environmental samples to determine chemical and bacteriological components. Work involves adherence to applicable quality control procedures and guidelines. This is an on-call position, working no more than 1000 hours per fiscal year.

Responsibilities
  1. Perform environmental tests and procedures, including water/wastewater sampling, testing, mosquito identification, and chemical analysis.
  2. Operate laboratory equipment such as microscopes, autoclaves, and pipettes.
  3. Prepare and process specimens for testing, including packaging and documentation.
  4. Develop and maintain quality control procedures in compliance with regulatory authorities (IEPA, IDPH, USEPA).
  5. Communicate results and follow-up actions to clients via telephone.
  6. Enter testing data accurately.
  7. Distribute specimen kits to staff and maintain a list of certified external laboratories.
  8. Meet productivity standards and develop training for staff.
  9. Provide administrative backup and produce reports for internal and external use.
  10. Respond to client questions and complaints.
  11. Follow infection control and sterilization methods.
  12. Manage biohazard waste storage and maintain a clean work environment.
  13. Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot lab equipment.
  14. Assist with field specimen collection during outbreaks.
  15. Supervise interns and maintain confidentiality and compliance with privacy laws.
  16. Participate in emergency response activities as assigned.
Qualifications

Completion of an Associate’s Degree in Chemistry, Biological, or related field, and at least six months of laboratory water sampling and analysis experience, or equivalent training and experience meeting state requirements.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of environmental sciences, chemistry, and biology principles.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, safety, and quality control practices.
  • Skill in laboratory analysis, equipment operation, result interpretation, report maintenance, and communication.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with customers and operate computer hardware and software.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Regularly lift and carry at least 25 pounds. Work involves hazardous materials, chemicals, odors, and sometimes fieldwork in extreme weather or confined spaces.
