Steffes seeks an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Supervisor to lead the facility EHS team across Dickinson, Grand Forks, ND, and Shelby, NC. The role focuses on incident prevention, regulatory compliance, and building a strong Mission Zero culture within a dynamic operations environment.

The supervisor will drive the EHS program, coordinate audits and inspections, and partner with Operations to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient site performance. Travel up to 15% is possible.

Responsibilities

  • Lead site-level EHS professionals across multiple geographic areas, setting expectations and ownership.
  • Lead the implementation of Steffes EHS Management System including policy, forms, and tools.
  • Coordinate compliance with federal/state/local safety, health, and environmental regs.
  • Perform layered audits of the EHS Management System for compliance.
  • Ensure completion of routine facility inspections and audits.
  • Lead incident intake and first-line response coordination between EHS Team and site.
  • Plan and maintain the EHS After-Hours program.
  • Coordinate between EHS Team and Operations for urgent needs.
  • Develop coaching frameworks and work instructions to foster safety ownership.
  • Generate EHS reports for regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Review and trend EHS data to drive improvement plans.
  • Complete required training to be a site first-responder.
  • Maintain a positive atmosphere through collaboration with customers, suppliers, and management.
  • Assist in meeting Steffes' Strategic, Quality and Safety objectives.

Job description

Position Summary: The primary role of the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Supervisor is to provide leadership for day-to-day operations for the facility EHS team, while providing guidance to internal customers on incident prevention, regulatory compliance, and promoting a strong EHS culture as defined through Mission Zero. This position requires a passion for EHS, strong organizational and communication skills, dynamic problem solving, research skills, and the ability to maintain company and employee confidentiality. This role is responsible for supervision of members of the facility EHS team, which are located in Dickinson and Grand Forks, ND and Shelby, NC.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead site-level EHS professionals across multiple geographic areas, which includes setting expectations and driving team member ownership and accountability. This also includes partnership with the EHS Manager to implement core team priorities to align with EHS functional and Steffes strategic requirements.
  2. Lead the implementation of Steffes EHS Management System, to include policy, procedure, forms, and tools.
  3. Coordinate compliance systems management as it relates to federal, state, and/ or local safety, health, and environmental regulations.
  4. Perform layered audits of Steffes EHS Management System for compliance to the system from the EHS Team and other internal parties.
  5. Ensures completion of routine facility inspections and audits.
  6. Leads incident intake and first-line response coordination between the EHS Team and affected site. Responsible for ensuring adherence of the EHS Team to processes and documentation as required by internal policy and regulatory recordkeeping requirements.
  7. Leads the structure, planning, and maintenance of the EHS After-Hours program.
  8. Acts as primary coordinator between the EHS Team and Operations for unplanned, urgent needs. Performs request validity, delegation to EHS Team members, planning, and communication.
  9. Partners with the EHS Manager to build coaching framework and work instruction that foster collaboration and ownership of site safety with the Operations Team.
  10. Generate various EHS reports as required by regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, Worker’s Compensation, etc.).
  11. Review, analyze, and trend data EHS data to develop improvement plans in targeted areas with the site EHS professional.
  12. Complete required training/certifications to be a site first-responder.
  13. Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating collaboratively with customers, suppliers, co workers, and management.
  14. Helps company meet its Strategic, Quality and Safety objectives.
  15. Other duties may be assigned.
Travel

Ability to Travel up to 15%, or as required.

Decision-Making Authority

The EHS Supervisor has authority to assess, analyze, and delegate site-level EHS tasking to EHS Specialists and Technicians. This role will exercise independent judgement and decision-making authority over matters pertaining to incident response, incident remediation, Worker’s Compensation submissions, audit/ inspection cadence, and implementation and adherence to the EHS Management System in alignment with approved strategy and established policy/procedure. The EHS Supervisor will have authority in the planning, delegation, and execution of tactical and some strategic initiatives.

Measure of Success

Adherence to, and positive reinforcement of Mission Zero to the Steffes Team, customers, contractors, and suppliers will be the reigning hallmark of success in this role. Success in this role is further defined as maintaining accuracy in required EHS reporting KPI’s, identifying and implementing EHS risk-reduction activities, and high discipline in training and audit frequency. The EHS Supervisor will also be measured to standardization of processes between operational locations and service levels that support Steffes operational, customer, and regulatory requirements.

Functional & Cognitive Requirements
  • This position requires walking, sitting or standing to a significant degree.
  • Must have the ability to lift 70 pounds from floor to waist, carry 50 pounds, and push and/or pull up to 100 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to climb ladders and/or stairs.
  • Stooping, crouching, kneeling and bending.
  • Handling, feeling, and gripping would be required for some activities.
  • Visual acuity is required to inspect work completed.
  • This role may be subject to internal and external environmental conditions.
  • Learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, make timely decisions in the context of a workflow, ability to communicate with visitors, ability to complete tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity quota.
