Position Summary

We are currently searching for a Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Specialist for a manufacturing company in Auburn Hills, MI. This is a contract-to-direct opportunity with a growing manufacturing company.

You will be responsible for administering, monitoring, and continuously improving the company’s health, safety, and environmental programs, systems, policies, and procedures. This position plays a key role in maintaining regulatory compliance, reducing workplace risks, promoting employee safety, supporting environmental initiatives, and fostering a strong culture of health and safety throughout the organization.

You will work closely with Operations, Engineering, Facilities, Human Resources, and other departments to identify hazards, implement corrective actions, conduct training and audits, investigate incidents, and ensure compliance with applicable company policies and local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, MIOSHA, NFPA, EPA, and applicable local ordinances.

• Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable legal and regulatory requirements related to Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs.


• Participate in the development, review, modification, implementation, and enforcement of HSE policies, procedures, and programs.


• Monitor and maintain health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, MIOSHA, NFPA, EPA, local ordinances, and other regulatory requirements.


• Conduct and coordinate peer safety reviews, internal HSE audits, facility inspections, and best-practice assessments.


• Identify existing and potential workplace hazards and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative measures.


• Track corrective actions and work with responsible departments to ensure timely resolution and continuous improvement.


• Represent the HSE function during external audits supporting the maintenance of company ISO certifications and assist with new ISO initiatives as needed.


• Conduct facility inspections and coordinate activities related to fire prevention and protection systems in accordance with applicable NFPA standards, working closely with Facilities personnel.


• Investigate workplace accidents, injuries, incidents, and near misses; identify root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.


• Prepare, maintain, and submit required accident, injury, environmental, and regulatory reports.


• Compile documentation, data, photographs, and other evidence required for regulatory hearings, legal proceedings, insurance investigations, and related matters.


• Support and review product and process risk assessments in cooperation with Engineering and other appropriate departments.


• Develop, coordinate, and deliver HSE training programs designed to improve employee knowledge, proficiency, and awareness of safe work practices.


• Conduct safety training for employees and coordinate qualified external training resources when specialized training is required.


• Maintain accurate HSE records, training documentation, inspection reports, audit findings, incident investigations, and corrective-action records.


• Monitor and maintain HSE systems, documentation, policies, and procedures in accordance with ISO standards and company requirements.


• Promote employee engagement and accountability in workplace safety and environmental practices.


• Stay current with changes to applicable HSE laws, regulations, standards, and industry best practices.


• Partner with management and employees to identify opportunities for continuous improvement in safety, environmental compliance, and risk reduction.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.


• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a health, safety, environmental, industrial safety, or related role.


• Working knowledge of applicable OSHA/MIOSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other federal, state, and local HSE requirements.


• Experience conducting workplace inspections, safety audits, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.


• Experience developing and delivering employee safety training.


• Strong written and verbal communication skills.


• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.


• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


• Ability to work collaboratively with employees and management at all levels of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals


• Experience supporting ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or other ISO management systems.


• Experience with internal and external ISO audits.


• Knowledge of industrial/manufacturing environments.


• Experience with fire prevention and protection systems and applicable NFPA standards.


• Experience with risk assessments, root-cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action programs.


• Experience working with environmental compliance programs.

This position is primarily performed in an industrial/manufacturing environment and requires regular interaction with employees, supervisors, management, Engineering, Facilities, and other departments. The HSE Specialist may be required to walk through manufacturing and production areas, conduct facility inspections, observe work activities, and evaluate workplace conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk and stand for extended periods while conducting facility inspections.


• Ability to navigate manufacturing, warehouse, office, and other facility environments.


• Ability to occasionally bend, reach, climb stairs, and access areas as necessary for inspections and investigations.


• Ability to wear required PPE.


• Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
