We're currently seeking a highly skilled Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead safety operations on a major tunneling and water infrastructure project in Queens, NY. This role is ideal for a seasoned EHS professional looking to take the lead on a high-impact initiative while managing a team of 3-6 safety personnel.
Non-Local Rate: $50 - $52/hr + $150/day per diem
Local Rate: $55 - $59/hr
Pay Frequency: Weekly
This assignment involves overseeing the EHS operations for the construction of a large water tunnel critical to the delivery of fresh water across the New York metropolitan area. The position requires underground construction safety expertise, including confined space oversight, environmental compliance, and the leadership of a multi-person safety team in a dynamic, high-risk environment.
Minimum 5 years of EHS and wastewater infrastructure experience
HAZWOPER 40-hour certification (Required)
Confined Space Entry certification (Required)
RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) training (Required)
OSHA 500 certification (Preferred)
Lead and manage a team of 3-6 field safety professionals
Conduct safety audits, inspections, and hazard assessments
Enforce compliance with OSHA, EPA, and project-specific EHS regulations
Develop and manage site-specific safety plans, including confined space and environmental controls
Deliver safety training, orientations, and toolbox talks
Serve as the primary point of contact for all site safety matters
Respond to and investigate incidents, implement corrective actions, and document findings
Monitor and ensure use of proper PPE and compliance with all safety procedures
Strong leadership presence and the ability to influence team-wide safety culture
Excellent communication and public speaking skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word)
Highly organized and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting
Experience managing subcontractor compliance and field safety coordination
Knowledge of tunneling, environmental remediation, and water infrastructure safety is highly desirable
In-depth understanding of OSHA, RCRA, and confined space regulations as they apply to civil and underground infrastructure projects. Must be capable of interpreting and applying site-specific safety requirements while maintaining open communication with multiple contractors and stakeholders.
