Job Function

The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Director, Aerospace provides leadership and direction for all EHS aspects in the Aerospace Operating Group of Reliance, Inc., with joint accountability for EHS performance with the Group President. The position will report directly to the Aerospace Operating Group President, with dotted line, functional reporting to the VP, EHS and Fleet Safety.

The Group EHS Director time commitments are expected to be approximately 80% Group focused and 20% Corporate EHS focused. This leader will conduct short and long-term strategic planning for all Group EHS matters in conjunction with the Group President and Corporate EHS Leadership,Enand will create a vision for excellence by using influence, collaboration and creativity to drive improvement to EHS cultures and systems. This includes, but is not limited to, working with Group Executives and Operational Leaders to create world class EHS culture and performance, integrate EHS planning into all aspects of the Group business, and work with Corporate EHS, Group Operations Leaders and functional EHS leaders to ensure the right resources, tools and systems are available to maintain compliance, implement best practices, and drive continuous improvement to attain and sustain world class EHS performance (Zero SIFs, Zero non-compliances, and TRIR < 0.50).

Corporate accountabilities include Reliance, Inc., strategic planning, serving as a subject matter expert (SME), where applicable, supporting corporate self-governance audits, seeking and sharing best practices, and supporting various reporting and communication actions/initiatives on behalf of Corporate EHS, as required.

Strategic Leadership and Alignment

• Lead the development and execution of the Group EHS strategy, goals, and long-range plans in alignment with Reliance Inc. and Corporate EHS priorities, collaborating with executive, commercial, functional, and operational leaders to drive continuous improvement in EHS systems and performance.
• Develop and manage Group EHS metrics, budgets, and continuous improvement initiatives across safety, health, environmental, and security.
• Proactively identify/act on improvement opportunities, deliver practical solutions that support strategic objectives.

Systems, Standards and Compliance

• Ensure EHS systems, standards and procedures are consistently implemented throughout the Group, and that Group leadership (i.e., company leaders, EHS function staff, etc.) is accountable for compliance with applicable laws and Reliance, Inc., EHS expectations.
• Strategically support Reliance EHS self-governance and system assessments focused on safety, health, and environment compliance and best practice standards to drive excellence and to improve organizational EHS knowledge and leadership.
• Support Reliance Inc. EHS reporting systems, communicate regular management/EHS reports and statistics at Group meetings; identify and communicate trends, opportunities and priorities for continuous improvement.
• Assist with the development of standard policies based on business, commercial and operational needs and imperatives, including input on corporate policies and standards, where applicable.
• Support Reliance’s capital project review requirements by participating in management of change and new equipment/process reviews.
• Support Group companies with compliance matters, including regulatory inquiries, in conjunction with Corporate EHS and Reliance Counsel.
• Support the integration of new merger/acquisitions into the Group, in coordination with Corporate EHS.

Resource Development and Support

• Develop Group EHS talent, and ensure resources fit the needs of the respective facilities and businesses, and the long-term goals of Reliance, Inc., and our EHS vision, including recruitment support, candidate interviews, and involvement in final decision-making of any Group EHS candidate.
• Provide technical support and mentoring to Group Operations and EHS leaders, and ensure EHS accountability rests with line management (i.e., Group President, Company/FOC/Facility Leaders, EHS Leaders and Front Line Operations leaders).
• Facilitate regular (i.e., weekly or monthly) Group EHS calls, organize and lead training sessions that supplement and support Reliance standards and applicable regulations, where applicable, conduct regular site visits and company reviews, and develop Reliance’s Operational EHS leaders.

Risk Management

• Ensure incident investigations, root causation and mitigation strategies are thorough and complete, and that learnings are cascaded to others in the organization so they are leveraged for systemic improvement.
• Ensure effective injury management systems are in place at all Group sites and provide case management guidance to site leadership to minimize injury severity.
• Support Group case management actions, including engagement with worker’s compensation insurance and participation in applicable Group injury-claim reviews.

SUPPLEMENTAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Able to analyze and strategically plan new or improved EHS-related cultural and leadership needs, compliance measures and best practice improvement initiatives; and, effectively influence Group change, as required, to drive continuous improvement and achieve world class EHS performance throughout the global network of the Aerospace Operating Group.
• Advise senior Group, operational, company and site leadership on investments necessary to meet requirements for world class EHS performance.
• Ensure Group incident reviews are well planned, executed and communicated, and facility leadership complete any findings in a timely, conscientious manner that considers systematic improvements to prevent recurrence.
• Plan and facilitate Group EHS meetings at a regular frequency (i.e., monthly or quarterly, etc.), support Corporate EHS messaging, and facilitate periodic face-to-face meetings of Group EHS leadership.

Required Skills

REQUIRED & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree in Engineering, Safety or Environmental Science, with 10 or more years of experience, ideally in manufacturing or materials distribution, or equivalent industrial experience as an EHS leader for a multi-site organization.
• Seven or more years of management experience leading multi-site EHS teams, including international operations (Europe, Asia).
• Broad knowledge of EHS laws/regulations, with strong technical skills in safety and health, including OSHA compliance requirements to include machine guarding, energy control, risk assessment, crane and powered industrial truck management, training/on-boarding, and fall prevention). Environmental, industrial hygiene, and occupational health knowledge is a plus (note: basic knowledge will need to be attained to fulfil the requirements of this leadership role).
• Demonstrated ability to strategically plan and lead an organization to a zero-incident, SIF-free culture.
• Excellent influencing skills; able to quickly assess and resolve problems in an efficient manner.
• Able to assert ideas and persuade others to gain support and motivate Group leadership to engage and act.
• Professional health/safety certification preferred (e.g., CIH, CSP, etc.).
• Skilled and experienced in Root Cause Analysis methodologies and EHS auditing.
• Experience leading EHS management systems and behavioral safety programs preferred.
• A demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and sites/businesses simultaneously.
• Able to develop and implement effective key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive desired outcomes and performance, and the maturity to know when and how to elevate matters, when needed.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently to drive continuous improvement to accomplish overall Reliance and Group EHS goals.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to develop strong working relationships at all levels of the organization.
• Able to travel approximately 50-60% - globally - in support of the Group, to include limited Corporate EHS travel in support of strategic planning, auditing, etc.
• Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Professional system.
• Conducts all work with the highest level of ethical standards.
