Job summary

The Environmental Group Manager position with the Department of Environmental Protection in Harrisburg oversees major reclamation and permitting activities, coordinating technical teams and guiding statewide project decisions.

The role supports safe and responsible project development across the Commonwealth, supervising staff, directing project reviews, and coordinating major reclamation and permitting activities. Telework may be available part-time, up to 3 days per week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, engineering, or related field, with five years of professional environmental protection experience.
• Or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

• Manage permitting activities related to erosion control, stormwater, waterway impacts, and site construction needs.
• Prepare and evaluate requests for proposals and direct professional service agreements for technical studies.
• Work with state, federal, and local agencies to support reclamation, permitting, and project compliance.
• Explain project details to consultants, officials, and community members and provide technical guidance.

Job description

The Environmental Group Manager with the Department of Environmental Protection is an exciting opportunity to oversee major reclamation and permitting activities. This role places you at the center of coordinating technical teams, reviewing environmental work, and guiding statewide project decisions. You will support safe and responsible project development across the Commonwealth. It is an excellent fit for someone who enjoys leadership and solving complex environmental challenges.

This position manages the Mine Fire, Permitting, and Professional Services Section by supervising staff, directing project reviews, and coordinating major reclamation and permitting activities. As an Environmental Group Manager, you will perform the following duties:

• Project Leadership: Oversee mine fire and subsidence investigations, environmental assessments, and engineering reviews
• Staff Supervision: Guide geologic and engineering staff, review work products, and support performance evaluations
• Permit Oversight: Manage permitting activities related to erosion control, stormwater, waterway impacts, and site construction needs
• Contract Management: Prepare and evaluate requests for proposals and direct professional service agreements for technical studies
• Agency Coordination: Work with state, federal, and local agencies to support reclamation, permitting, and project compliance
• Public Communication: Explain project details to consultants, officials, and community members and provide technical guidance

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework:You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree in the biological, physical, or environmental sciences, engineering, or in a field closely related to environmental protection or regulation; and five years of professional environmental protection experience; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Conditions of Employment:

• This position requires possession of a valid driver's license.
