This full-time Environmental Field Technician role is based in Cincinnati, Ohio and supports a wide range of environmental projects across the Midwest, with a primary focus on sites within Ohio. You will contribute to brownfield redevelopment programs and other environmental contracts for federal, state, and commercial clients. The position combines extensive fieldwork with technical reporting and requires strong communication skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, including site reconnaissance, data review, and field investigations.

  • Support underground storage tank (UST) closure and corrective action investigations by performing field observations, sampling, and documentation.

  • Log soil cores and classify soils using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) to support subsurface characterization and reporting.

  • Provide field oversight and management of subcontractors during geophysical surveys and private utility clearances to ensure safe and accurate subsurface investigations.

  • Oversee subcontractor activities during drilling and installation of soil borings, monitoring wells, and soil gas probes, ensuring adherence to project specifications and safety requirements.

  • Support and oversee excavation and other remedial activities in the field, documenting conditions and progress for project records.

  • Conduct asbestos and lead‑based paint surveys in buildings and structures, following applicable procedures and regulations.

  • Provide field oversight during asbestos and lead‑based paint abatement activities to help ensure compliance with project and regulatory requirements.

  • Provide technical support for emergency response activities, including site assessment, removal assessment, and removal action support.

  • Maintain a rotating on‑call readiness schedule to respond to emergency incidents and provide remedial and restoration guidance and solutions to clients.

  • Communicate and interact professionally with vendors, clients, and subcontractors to coordinate field activities, clarify project requirements, and support successful project delivery.

  • Document field activities, observations, and sampling results clearly and accurately for use in technical reports and project records.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of environmental consulting experience in site assessments and/or remediation.

  • Experience conducting environmental site assessments, including Phase I and Phase II investigations.

  • Experience with groundwater and water sampling, including drinking water and other environmental media.

  • Familiarity with environmental remediation practices and field implementation.

  • Knowledge of environmental science principles and field investigation methods.

  • Ability to log soil cores and apply Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) soil classification in the field.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to various project sites as required.

  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in dynamic field environments.

  • Valid Hazwoper 40‑hour certification.

  • Degree in Environmental Science or a related field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Environmental science experience with emphasis on site assessment, remediation, or related disciplines.

  • Experience supporting brownfield redevelopment programs or similar environmental redevelopment projects.

  • Experience working on projects for federal, state, and commercial clients.

  • Prior involvement in emergency response, removal assessment, and removal action activities.

  • Experience conducting or supporting asbestos and lead‑based paint surveys and abatement oversight.

  • Strong organizational skills for managing multiple field tasks, samples, and documentation.

  • Comfort with maintaining a rotating on‑call schedule to support emergency response needs.

  • Interest in contributing to projects focused on water, environment, energy, and sustainable development.

Work Environment

This role is almost entirely field‑based, with the majority of time spent at project sites rather than in an office. You will travel frequently to locations throughout Ohio and occasionally to other areas in the Midwest, with some assignments requiring overnight stays in hotels. Fieldwork takes place outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and site settings, including active construction, industrial, and brownfield locations. You will work closely with drilling crews, subcontractors, and other field personnel, often around heavy equipment and active remediation activities.
