Government of the Virgin Islands is seeking an Environmental Specialist to apply scientific principles to protect air, land, water, and health in urban development contexts. You will inspect facilities, review permit applications, collect samples, and may testify in hearings.

Some positions may require scuba diving to assess underwater ecosystems. Applicants should have a biological sciences background, or an associate degree with experience, or two years as an Environmental Specialist Trainee.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of natural science and its relation to environmental control.
  • Knowledge of environmental control techniques and terminology.
  • Knowledge of sampling procedures and data collection.
  • Knowledge of investigations and analysis methods.
  • Knowledge of federal and local environmental laws and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speech.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work with public officials, businesses, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of sewage treatment plants, water and soil to ensure compliance.
  • Visit sites to observe conditions and practices.
  • Process permit applications from the public related to business type.
  • Review applications for accuracy and completeness.
  • Take steps to bring applications to completion.
  • Collect water, pesticide, and other samples for lab analysis.
  • May perform scuba diving to test underwater environments.
  • May testify in investigations or court hearings as needed.
