Job summary

WM seeks a supervisor to oversee operation and maintenance at closed landfills, ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and efficient performance. You will manage on-site activities, coordinate contractors, and review readings and reports across multiple facilities in the Greater Mid Atlantic region.

The role requires 1–3 years in environmental operations, strong communication, and the ability to work outdoors and in field conditions, with travel 3–6 times per quarter.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in environmental field.
  • Preferred OSHA 1910.120 Hazwoper training and First Aid; not required.
  • Knowledge of health, safety and environmental regulations.

Description
I. Job Summary

Supervise and conduct operation and maintenance activities at all assigned closed landfills.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned, as required.
  • Through on-site training, be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of site‑specific systems operation and maintenance requirements, including landfilling processes and management systems and controls, leachate management systems and controls, treatment systems and controls, groundwater and surface water systems, and other ancillary equipment and site maintenance requirements.

  • Manage site operation and maintenance activities within assigned site budgets. Notify District Manager if activities will cause a variance to annual budgeted amounts.

  • Supervises contractors and consultants. Reviews and evaluates work to ensure quality, timeliness and ensures quality control in adherence to policies and procedures.

  • Coordinates workflow and assignments toward the achievement of operational goals.

  • Supervises and monitors daily landfill operations, and reviews and controls implementation of safety regulations and company policies and procedures.

  • Coordinates, oversees repairs, maintenance, and inspections of closed landfill systems.

  • Collects/Reviews weekly and/or monthly readings. Creates and submits records and reports.

  • Direct supervision of third‑party contractors and consultants.

A. Education and Experience

Education:High School Diploma or G.E.D (accredited).

Experience:One (1) to three (3) years of previous relevant experience (in addition to education requirement).

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

Preferred: OSHA 1910.120 Hazwoper training and First aid. Not required.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences/Studies or equivalent technical degree and one (1) to three (3) years of environmental field experiences is preferred.

  • Health, safety and environmental regulations knowledge, and supervisory experience may be required.

  • Possess written and verbal communication skills and computer skills (e.g., MS office and Power BI familiarity) and ability to learn to utilize other job-related technical software, including, but not limited to “App” based technologies to facilitate digital inspections, reporting and data/analytics.

  • Some knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers, SCADA and/or automation and control systems is beneficial.

Work

  • Required to use motor controls with finge r dexterity toward the part of the work day.
  • Required to exceed physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds part of the work day.
  • Required to be exposed to physical occlusion risks (such as cuts, burns, r). Part of the work day.
  • Required to be exposed to physical airborne environmental hazards. Part of the work day.
  • This position is primarily field based with 40% of work being outdoors on closed landfills and 60% office work.
  • Assigned to multiple facilities in the Greater Mid Atlantic (GMA) area, which include Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia for site inspections or meetings, training, or program administration purposes; will be necessary 3 to 6 times per quarter, and that travel will require overnight stays.
