Job summary

Applied Digital is seeking an Environmental Compliance & Safety Technician to support EHS programs in a data center setting. You will ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, manage hazardous materials, and support risk reduction across the facility.

You will report to the Sr. EH&S Manager and work on emissions, water management, SPCC, and safety initiatives to maintain a safe, compliant operation of mission-critical infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or higher in environmental science, engineering, safety or related field.
  • Experience with environmental permitting, OSHA compliance, hazardous materials, and safety programs desirable.
  • Experience supporting environmental and safety compliance in data centers, power generation, or industrial facilities preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support air emissions compliance and permit tracking, including Title V and monitoring equipment.
  • Assist SPCC program implementation and inspections of oil-filled equipment and tanks.
  • Manage site water, stormwater, and wastewater compliance programs and sampling.
  • Maintain inventories of hazardous materials and ensure proper storage and disposal.
  • Support OSHA safety programs, inspections, JHAs, risk assessments, and safety training.
  • Conduct routine environmental and safety audits; track corrective actions.
  • Assist with incident investigations, LOTO, confined spaces, and emergency planning.

Position Summary

The Environmental Compliance & Safety Technician is responsible for supporting environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs within a data center environment as an owner representative to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, permit requirements, and company standards. This role focuses on environmental compliance, occupational safety, regulatory reporting, hazardous materials management, risk reduction, and operational support to maintain a safe, compliant, and reliable mission-critical facility. This position reports directly to the Sr. EH&S Manager for the campus.

Key Responsibilities
Air Emissions Compliance
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with applicable air permits, Title V requirements, and environmental regulations.
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and associated monitoring equipment.
  • Track emissions from emergency generators, fuel systems, boilers, and other permitted equipment.
  • Collect and analyze operational data, including fuel consumption and equipment runtimes, to verify permit compliance.
  • Support emissions testing activities and coordinate with third-party environmental consultants as required.
Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Program
  • Support implementation and maintenance of the facility SPCC Plan.
  • Conduct required inspections of oil-filled equipment, fuel systems, storage tanks, and secondary containment structures.
  • Ensure environmental inspections, training, and compliance activities are performed and documented.
  • Assist in spill response, investigation, corrective action development, and reporting activities.
Water Management & Compliance
  • Manage site water intake, discharge, stormwater, and wastewater compliance programs.
  • Conduct inspections, sampling, and monitoring activities to verify compliance with permit conditions.
  • Collect water samples and coordinate laboratory analysis.
  • Monitor environmental indicators, including pH, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), flow rates, and permit-specific parameters.
  • Administer site solid waste, recycling, universal waste, and hazardous waste programs.
  • Ensure proper waste segregation, labeling, storage, transportation, and disposal.
  • Maintain manifests, disposal records, and regulatory documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste generation and improve recycling performance.
Hazardous Materials Management
  • Maintain inventories of hazardous materials, fuels, chemicals, and regulated substances.
  • Ensure materials are stored, handled, and disposed of in accordance with regulatory requirements and company procedures.
  • Support Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management and chemical approval processes.
  • Prepare and maintain required regulatory reports and inventory submissions.
Safety Compliance & EHS Programs
  • Support compliance with OSHA regulations and company health and safety policies.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of data halls, electrical rooms, mechanical spaces, generator yards, fuel systems, and construction activities.
  • Identify hazards and implement corrective actions to reduce occupational risks.
  • Support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and safe work planning activities.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with facility safety requirements and site-specific safety plans.
  • Participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action tracking.
  • Support Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, energized electrical work, and fall protection programs.
  • Assist with emergency response planning, drills, inspections, and readiness activities.
  • Maintain EHS records, training documentation, inspection reports, and compliance metrics.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through employee engagement, observations, coaching, and awareness initiatives.
  • Collect environmental and operational data to support compliance and performance tracking.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Prepare environmental reports, compliance logs, emissions inventories, and regulatory submissions.
  • Maintain accurate environmental and safety records for audits and inspections.
Inspections, Audits, and Compliance Assurance
  • Conduct routine environmental and safety audits of facility operations and infrastructure.
  • Identify compliance gaps, potential permit violations, and operational risks.
  • Track corrective actions through completion.
  • Support internal audits, third-party assessments, customer audits, and regulatory agency inspections.
Basic Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical field.
  • Experience supporting environmental and safety compliance programs in data centers, power generation, industrial manufacturing, construction, or mission-critical facilities preferred.
  • Experience with environmental permitting, OSHA compliance, hazardous materials management, and safety programs is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Technical Skills
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring equipment, sampling methods, and data collection systems.
  • Familiarity with EHS management systems and compliance tracking software.
  • Ability to read and interpret permits, regulations, technical reports, and operating procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and environmental reporting tools.
