Job summary

NiSource Inc. Lead Environmental Inspector role coordinating environmental inspection activities for electric and gas construction. Guide inspectors, coordinate coverage, support quality and safety, and act as a subject matter expert in environmental compliance.

Role includes reviewing plans, performing inspections and audits, evaluating controls, and communicating results to project teams and stakeholders while mentoring staff and coordinating assignments with the Team Leader.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources/Management, Ecology or related field.
• Minimum 5 years environmental/stormwater inspection experience, including 2+ years with utility construction.
• Knowledge of environmental compliance, permitting, erosion controls, water crossings, restoration, and plans.
• Experience leading teams, coaching others, analyzing data, and driving corrective actions.
• Strong written, verbal, presentation, planning, organizational and stakeholder communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn digital inspection tools.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites and work outside normal hours.
• Ability to obtain NiSource operator qualifications and relevant environmental/stormwater certifications.

Responsibilities

• Review environmental compliance plans and provide technical guidance during preconstruction and field activities.
• Conduct and document inspections and audits, including photos, findings, corrective actions, and certifications.
• Evaluate erosion controls, water crossings, restoration, and other permit requirements.
• Monitor restoration activities, grading, seeding, habitat work, and sampling results.
• Communicate requirements and inspection results to contractors, teams and stakeholders.
• Develop corrective actions and continuous-improvement recommendations to reduce risk.
• Train, coach, mentor inspectors; review reports; support hiring decisions.
• Coordinate inspector assignments and project coverage with Team Leader; represent the team in meetings.
• Maintain licenses and certifications; travel to sites and support outside normal hours as needed.
