Job summary

The City of Mesquite is seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector to perform a variety of inspections on public and private property and to investigate citizen complaints regarding potential code violations.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED, with preferred certification in the International Property Maintenance Code or related college credits. No experience is required. The schedule is Mon-Fri, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.

Job description

Salary: $18.72/hr. minimum - $21.84/hr. midpoint (Depending on qualifications)

SUPERVISION

General supervision is provided by the Environmental Code Field Supervisor.

  1. All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
  2. Perform a variety of code enforcement inspections on public and private property; perform follow-up inspections as necessary. Drive to and from destinations as assigned by Supervisor.
  3. Responds to alleged violations; interview complainant and witnesses, take photographs of violations, document activities and update records on existing electronic software system.
  4. Performs research to determine the approved conditional uses of property; research ownership and take action to enforce city codes.
  5. Inspect and survey public and private property for nuisances, sewage, trash, debris or related unsanitary conditions. Use the computer to access data on property ownership and lienholders for notices, contracts and citations; prepare correspondence outlining code regulations and violations.
  6. Enforce the International Property Maintenance Code and investigate complaints including, but not limited to, property maintenance, zoning, and vehicle code violations; issue citations and notices or abatements as necessary.
  7. Maintains records and reports of inspections and surveillance activities; prepares reports as required.
  8. Interfaces and coordinates activities with other city departments, government agencies and the private sector.
  9. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Testify in court, as necessary, on various environmental code violations.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned.
  3. Available for rotating emergency after-hour inspections.
  4. Maintain maintenance on assigned vehicle.
  5. Work weekend illegal sign collection & enforcement duty, as required.
  6. Proper care and maintenance of assigned equipment
EDUCATION

High School diploma or GED.

Preferred: Certification in the International Property Maintenance Code or thirty (30) hours of credit from an accredited college or university in environmental code, public health or related field.

EXPERIENCE

No experience required.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Possession of a validdriver's license.

Must obtain certification as a Registered Code Enforcement Officer in the State of Texas within fifteen months from the date of employment.Failure to obtain certification will result in non-disciplinary termination.

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM-5:00 PM
