Job description

Overview

The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation's (VTDEC) Waste Management and Prevention Division seeks someone motivated to help others reduce pollution and its impacts. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in chemistry, toxicity, environmental health, emerging contaminants and pollution prevention and will work as part of the Residuals Management & Emerging Contaminants Program.

This position will assist VTDEC by: (1) providing technical assistance across DEC in support of its PFAS and other emerging contaminant source reduction efforts; (2) conducting literature reviews and data collection/analysis to prioritize emerging contaminant source reduction efforts; (3) developing pollution prevention strategies and technical assistance through participation in trainings, on-site facility or community level assessments, committees, meetings, and conferences/trainings; (4) managing grants focused on pollution prevention/emerging contaminants; and (5) providing education/outreach focused on pollution prevention/emerging contaminant source reduction efforts.

This position will work closely with a small team and the Director of the Waste Management and Prevention Division. The Agency of Natural Resources and this Division have an employee-friendly telework policy, which allows staff, once trained and with supervisor approval, to work from the office as little as a few days a month. The rest of the days, staff are welcome to work in the office as they wish or work from their home offices. When considering salary, remember that benefits are worth ~30% of total compensation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical knowledge of emerging contaminants, their fate and transport, mitigation, treatment, destruction, and alternatives/green chemistry
  • Experience working with and communicating scientific information to facilities and at the community level
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with diverse stakeholders, including the public
  • Strong technical and non-technical writing skills
  • Experience with data management and analysis

As of July 14, 2025, the step 1 rate for pay grade 24 will be $29.15 per hour.

It is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period of time. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field AND two (2) or more years of experience in a natural resources field.

OR

Master's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field AND one (1) or more years of experience in a natural resources field.

OR

Five (5) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
