Job summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a Data-Driven EnviroLab Temporary Research Specialist/Data Analyst to support interdisciplinary environmental research. The role focuses on building datasets, applying quantitative methods, and delivering reproducible workflows using R and/or Python.

Ideal candidates have a BS/BA or MS, experience with large datasets, and a passion for environmental, climate, energy, and sustainability topics.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Strong programming skills in R or Python with experience working with large or complex datasets, including data cleaning, merging, quality assurance, documentation, or reproducible workflows
• Experience with quantitative or statistical analysis (e.g., regression, panel-data analysis, machine learning) or geospatial analysis

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain research datasets by integrating administrative, web, geospatial, policy, and other public or proprietary data sources, with attention to data quality, documentation, and reproducibility.
• Build and maintain data pipelines using APIs, web scraping, automated collection, cleaning, classification, and validation methods.
• Conduct quantitative, statistical, and geospatial analyses to study environmental, economic, health, and policy questions; depending on the project, methods may include regression, panel-data analysis, machine learning, and spatial analysis.
• Create dashboards, visualizations, and other data products that translate complex datasets and findings into accessible information for researchers, policymakers, and the public.
• Contribute to research reports, academic publications, presentations, and other outputs produced by the interdisciplinary team.
