Qualifications

• ABET-accredited BS in Civil Engineering is required/preferred.
• Engineering-in-Training Certification is preferred or obtainable within 6–12 months.
• Internship or work experience with municipal or State/DOT projects is a plus.
• Experience with AutoCAD/Civil3D and/or Bentley Microstation/InRoads/Open Roads is preferred.
• Knowledge of civil engineering design and construction surveying concepts is preferred.
• MS Office (Word/Excel) experience is required.
• Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities

• Support a variety of projects including data collection and analysis for reports.
• Develop horizontal/vertical alignments, cross sections, and site plans; perform design tasks.
• Prepare stormwater, right-of-way, utility relocation, permit drawings, and traffic-related plans.

Job description

AMT is growing and is seeking a highly motivated Entry Level Transportation Engineer to join our growing Transportation team of design professionals in our Richmond, VA office upon graduation in December 2026.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on challenging projects, develop your career, and seek advancement as a Transportation Engineer. In addition to supporting projects in their assigned office, the candidate may be involved with other AMT offices and project opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Support a variety of projects which may involve collection of data, existing condition and alternative analysis evaluation for engineering reports
• Development of horizontal and vertical alignments, performing cross section and super-elevation design, roadside barrier design, ADA curb ramp design, roadway modeling, grading plans, development of site plans, and providing design support for erosion and sediment control plans
• Stormwater management plans, right-of-way plans, utility relocation plans, permit application drawings, and traffic related plans.

Qualifications

• BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution
• Engineering-in-Training Certification (or ability to obtain in 6-12 months) preferred
• Prior internship or work experience preferred, experience with Municipal or State/US Department of Transportation projects a plus
• Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD/Civil3D and/or Bentley Microstation/InRoads or Open Roads is preferred
• Knowledge of civil engineering design and construction surveying concepts preferred
• Experience with MS Office products including Word and Excel
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, project managers, supervisors, and other team members
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
