WSP is seeking an Entry Level Substation Structural Engineer for our Duluth, GA office, with consideration for Oradell, NJ and Baton Rouge, LA. You will participate in the analysis, design, and delivery of structural solutions for substation projects, including load-bearing structures and foundations.

You will prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction documents; work under supervision; collaborate with electrical, civil, geotechnical teams; utilize structural analysis

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Support structural engineering work for electrical substation projects, including steel structures and foundations.
  • Prepare detailed structural calculations, load development, and design criteria.

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Entry Level Substation Structural Engineer for our Duluth, GA office. The following locations will also be considered: Oradell, NJ; and Baton Rouge, LA.

This Opportunity

Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the analysis, design, and delivery of structural engineering solutions supporting projects in the substation industry. Tasks may include basic assistance with engineering, design, calculation development, specifications, and construction documentation for load-bearing structures or structural elements, such as equipment steel structures, foundations, and rigid bus supports. Generates accurate and concise documentation for assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.

Your Impact
  • Under general supervision, perform structural engineering work supporting electrical substation projects, including steel structures, rigid bus support design, and reinforced-concrete foundations.
  • Under general supervision, prepare detailed structural calculations, design criteria, load development, and calculation packages to satisfy client standards, project requirements, and applicable codes and standards (ASCE7, ASCE113, ACI 318, AISC 360, NESC, IEEE, etc.).
  • Under general supervision, create engineering drawing markups for drafting that align with design calculations.
  • Assist with developing construction specifications (steel and concrete), cost estimates, and technical inputs for proposals and project schedules.
  • Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance and cross-disciplinary coordination (electrical, civil, geotechnical, and construction) to support integrated substation design solutions.
  • Utilize structural analysis and finite element modeling tools to evaluate and size structural systems and foundations.
  • Maintain quality control standards and conduct QA/QC reviews of structural deliverables before submission.
  • Support project structural leads with reporting requirements and technical coordination.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.
  • Familiarity with relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., RISA3D, RISA Foundation, LPile, MathCad, MicroStation, AutoCAD, STADD).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or an active participant in local professional practice organizations.
