Job summary

Thorlabs, a leader in photonics components and systems, seeks a Mechanical Shop Inspector to uphold high-quality standards within the Mechanics group. You will perform first article, in-process, and production inspections of precision components produced on internal CNC machinery and manual equipment.

Based in Newton, NJ with occasional duties at other Thorlabs locations, you will use micrometers, calipers, and gauges, and ensure accurate documentation and non-conforming material handling.

Qualifications

• High School or Trade School diploma or equivalent.
• 1–3 years of related experience is a plus.
• Ability to interpret mechanical blueprint specifications (metric/imperial) with basic understanding of fit, tolerancing and thread classifications.
• Ability to learn to use handheld inspection tools including micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
• Proficient MS Office skills.

Responsibilities

• Unbiased evaluation of internally produced items to blueprint specifications and manufacturing standards.
• Utilize various inspection equipment and methods to measure highly toleranced components.
• Perform and document accurate, efficient, and thorough dimensional and visual inspections (first article, in-process, and sample lot).
• Segregate and clearly mark non-conforming material; sort and rework product when required.
• Ensure components are handled carefully, clearly marked, and organized with accurate quantities.
• Maintain calibrated and well-maintained equipment; keep workspace clean and organized.
• Continuously strive to improve quality, processes, procedures, communication, and documentation.
