Job summary

Dallas County is hiring an entry-level Juvenile Detention Officer to supervise youths in a 24‑hour detention facility. You will contribute to health, safety and welfare while adhering to department policies and TJJD standards.

You will deliver individual and group counseling, maintain behavior documentation, and assist with intake/discharge processes, transportation, and medication administration as needed. A valid Texas driver’s license and background check are required.

Qualifications

• Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
• Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
• Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and a clean driving record.
• Background investigation and mandatory drug testing are required.

Responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day direct supervision of youths in a 24‑hour detention facility to ensure safety and welfare.
• Offer individual and group counseling to youths to promote awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
• Make critical judgments during crises in the absence of supervision and document actions taken.
• Discipline youths according to facility rules and forward information to appropriate personnel.
• Serve as back‑up to staff, including transporting youths, processing intakes/discharges, and handling medications when needed.
• Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and searches.
• Coordinate daily educational and recreational programs and activities for youths.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
