Job summary

The City of Colorado Springs is seeking an entry-level Fire Code Inspector I to perform inspections citywide and in assigned areas. You will review compliance with fire and safety codes, handle hazardous materials inquiries, and assist with permits and education on fire prevention.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, one year of related experience, and will obtain ICC/State Fire Inspector I certifications within 12 months.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • One year of full-time related experience.
  • Valid driver's license without restrictions.
  • Within 12 months, obtain ICC Fire Inspector I, Colorado Fire Inspector I, and ICS 100/200/700 certifications.
  • Background check including fingerprint is required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect buildings to ensure compliance with fire and safety codes.
  • Consult with business owners, architects, engineers, and hazardous materials specialists on handling, transport and storage of hazardous materials and flammable liquids.
  • Ensure storage and use of hazardous materials comply with codes and laws.
  • Present fire prevention topics to City staff and the public.
  • Enforce fire prevention standards and related codes.
  • Examine interiors and exteriors for hazardous conditions or code violations.
  • Interpret plans and drawings to verify code compliance.
  • Advise others on unsafe conditions and corrective actions.
  • Maintain and update files and records of inspection activities, calls, and meetings.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Stay current on technology related to fire protection systems and software.
