Job Title: Entry Level Field Technician

Job Description

The Distribution Field Technician plays a key role in supporting the safe and reliable operation of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. Based out of the Dayton/Kettering, OH area, this position focuses on field inspections, data collection, and documentation of low voltage distribution equipment. The technician measures and maps distribution systems, identifies and records equipment on poles, and prepares minor work orders and reports that help maintain and improve electrical infrastructure. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy outdoor work, are comfortable with physical activity, and are interested in transitioning from more physically demanding environments into a field-focused, inspection and data collection position.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Dayton-area office daily to receive assignments and prepare for field work.

  • Conduct visual inspections of overhead and underground electrical distribution equipment to support safe and reliable system operation.

  • Compile accurate field data and prepare minor work orders based on inspection findings.

  • Maintain detailed and organized reports of distribution equipment, inspections, and measurements.

  • Measure and map out Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) systems to support distribution design and planning.

  • Identify and record electrical equipment on poles, including associated hardware and components.

  • Perform system inventories and audits of electrical distribution assets and related equipment.

  • Support joint use management activities, including documenting third-party attachments and easements.

  • Assist with permitting-related field work by gathering site data and verifying existing conditions.

  • Perform pad-mount inspections to assess condition, accessibility, and compliance of equipment.

  • Conduct ground-line pole inspections and basic pole analysis to help evaluate structural condition.

  • Support metering and apparatus services, as well as lighting audits and other field technical services as assigned.

  • Use laptops, tablets, GPS units, and other electronic devices to collect, enter, and verify field data in real time.

  • Operate height sticks, range finders, and similar equipment to take accurate field measurements.

  • Develop and apply a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), electric utility construction standards, and communication facilities.

  • Follow established safety practices and field procedures while working around electrical distribution systems and related infrastructure.

  • Achieve weekly billable goals and productivity targets in alignment with project guidelines and expectations.

  • Collaborate with field team members and office staff to ensure accurate data collection, clear communication, and timely completion of assignments.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to conduct detailed visual inspections of overhead and underground electrical distribution equipment in an outdoor field environment.

  • Capability to accurately collect, record, and organize field data for use in reports and minor work orders.

  • Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use software such as Microsoft Excel for data entry and report preparation.

  • Comfort using laptops, tablets, GPS devices, and other electronic tools for field data collection and navigation.

  • Ability to operate field measurement tools such as height sticks and range finders safely and accurately.

  • Willingness and ability to develop a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), electric utility construction standards, and communication facilities.

  • Strong attention to detail when measuring and mapping Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) systems and documenting equipment on poles.

  • Comfort working outdoors for extended periods and performing moderate physical tasks such as walking, standing, and carrying equipment.

  • Reliable time management skills to meet weekly billable goals and project deadlines.

  • Valid driving capability that aligns with company vehicle driving requirements.

  • High School Diploma preferred or equivalent level of education.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in physically demanding roles such as manual labor, construction, utility locating, landscaping, manufacturing, or warehouse/cold storage work.

  • Experience in clock-in/clock-out environments with long hours and consistent attendance.

  • Interest in transitioning from heavy physical labor into a role focused on outdoor visual inspections and data collection.

  • Familiarity with utility locating, power distribution, overhead lines, distribution design, pole analysis, and easement concepts is beneficial.

  • Associate-level technology degree is welcome when combined with relevant hands-on work experience.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with field partners and communicate clearly about site conditions and findings.

  • Motivation to learn new technical concepts and pursue additional skills or certifications related to electrical distribution systems.

Work Environment

The Distribution Field Technician reports to the Dayton-area office each workday and then travels with a designated team member to assigned field locations. Most project sites are located within approximately one hour of the office. The schedule typically follows four 10-hour workdays, with the potential to work five 10-hour days when needed. Work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and involves walking, standing, and carrying field equipment while inspecting overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. The role uses laptops, tablets, GPS devices, and specialized measurement tools such as height sticks and range finders. The environment emphasizes safety, teamwork, and consistent field productivity, while offering a less physically demanding alternative to traditional manual labor roles and providing opportunities for skill development and career growth in utility field services.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Dayton, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
