Actalent is seeking a Field Service Engineer to commission and support building automation systems for large data centers in Indiana. You will install, diagnose, and optimize DDC systems, review drawings with iPad-enabled tools, and lead site startups with a strong focus on customer satisfaction.

Based in Muncie, IN, you will travel to client sites for training and project work, with a path toward supervisory or project management roles as you expand expertise in building automation and HVAC

Job Title: Field Service EngineerJob Description

This Field Service Engineer role focuses on commissioning and supporting building automation systems for large data centers in LaPorte, IN and Elkhart, IN. You work on advanced chiller plant controls, HVAC, energy monitoring, demand response, lighting, indoor air quality, humidity, temperature, and elevator performance systems. Using an iPad and provided drawing packages, you ensure systems are configured correctly, perform diagnostics, and support site startups and commissioning activities for direct digital control (DDC) equipment. The role offers strong technical growth, structured training, and clear career progression across multiple Field Engineer levels and into supervisory and project management paths.

Responsibilities

• Initiate, install, troubleshoot, and optimize customer systems that utilize advanced Direct Digital Control technology in data center environments.
• Serve as the local technical contact and act as a leader in the field for building automation and controls-related issues.
• Provide effective solutions for increasingly complex system issues involving HVAC, controls, and building automation platforms.
• Deliver turnkey project execution for small to medium projects, ensuring all controls, sensors, and software operate properly.
• Use an iPad and other tools to review, adjust, and verify system settings and controls, running diagnostics to confirm proper operation.
• Support site startups for the DDC side of equipment and provide commissioning support for building automation systems.
• Follow drawing packages and control schematics, then update documentation as needed to reflect as-built conditions.
• Load and configure building automation software, including trends, alarms, and reports, to meet project and customer requirements.
• Implement effective time management strategies to meet project deadlines and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
• Communicate project status, technical findings, and system details clearly to customers and internal teams, and document work performed.
• Provide site-specific training to owners and operators on the complete system, including controls, sensors, and software interfaces.
• Act as a resource for less experienced Field Engineers by helping solve complex problems and supporting their training and development.
• Travel to client sites for initial training and shadowing at other customer locations, then transition to primary work at data centers in Indiana.
• Check out and commission common HVAC control devices such as sensors, valves, damper motors, relays, and related components.
• Read and interpret HVAC mechanical prints and building automation drawings to verify correct installation and operation of systems.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, technical or business school certificate, or diploma in HVAC controls or a closely related field.
• 3 to 5 years of experience with building automation, HVAC controls, or a related field for the core experienced level of the role.
• Technical knowledge and prior exposure to HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, pressure systems, temperature control, and building mechanical equipment.
• Ability to perform electrical troubleshooting and work confidently with building automation and control systems.
• Proficiency in using an electrical multi-meter and the ability to explain how it is used in troubleshooting and commissioning.
• Understanding of actuators, including what they are and how they function within HVAC and control systems.
• Knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs) and their role in controlling motors and system performance.
• Ability to step into customer environments and get systems up and running, demonstrating strong ownership of commissioning tasks.
• Self-motivated with a strong drive to learn, problem-solve, and figure out complex technical issues using available documentation and tools.
• Valid and current driver’s license and ability to be insurable under company vehicle insurance requirements.
• Ability to travel to client sites for training and project work as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, technical or business school certificate, or diploma in HVAC, controls, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
• 0 to 2 years of experience in entry-level roles related to mechanical construction, building construction, solar, power plants, or building energy fields for junior candidates.
• 6 to 8 years of advanced experience or 8+ years of master-level experience in building automation, HVAC controls, or similar environments for senior candidates.
• Experience with building automation software such as WebCTRL and installing increasingly complex building automation controls.
• Basic knowledge of navigating and integrating into a variety of building automation systems and platforms.
• Good understanding of common HVAC systems including rooftop units (RTUs), air handlers, variable air volume (VAV) boxes, chillers, and boilers.
• Ability to read and understand HVAC mechanical prints and building automation drawings.
• Experience checking out and commissioning HVAC controls devices such as sensors, valves, damper motors, and relays.
• Familiarity with building management systems (BMS) and building automation concepts.
• Experience using tools such as multimeters and other standard electrical and mechanical testing equipment.
• Interest in field construction and hands-on work in mechanical or energy-related projects.
• Strong customer focus with the ability to communicate clearly, document work thoroughly, and provide effective training to system operators.
• Capacity to work on increasingly complex problems and support the training and development of less experienced Field Engineers.
• Willingness to pursue long-term projects, typically a minimum of two years and potentially extending to three to five years.
• Motivation to advance through Field Engineer levels and into supervisory or project management roles as skills and experience grow.

Work Environment

The role is primarily based at data centers located in LaPorte, IN and Elkhart, IN, with initial travel to other customer sites for the first three to five months for training and shadowing. During training, you typically work a standard schedule of five days per week. Once the Indiana data centers are fully active, the schedule may expand to six or seven days per week depending on project demands. You work with advanced building automation technologies, including chiller plant controls, HVAC systems, energy monitoring, demand response, lighting, indoor air quality, humidity and temperature control, and elevator performance monitoring. You use an iPad, a company-provided laptop, and standard field tools such as electrical multimeters to perform diagnostics, commissioning, and system optimization. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Muncie, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
