Job summary

S&ME is seeking an Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineering Technician in Spartanburg, SC. You will begin outdoors, gaining hands-on field experience and building a strong career foundation while contributing to projects that matter.

You will perform concrete, soils, asphalt, and masonry testing, with paid on-the-job training and certification support through ACI and ICC. A valid US driver’s license and flexibility are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Willingness to learn and obtain certifications.
  • Strong work ethic and teamwork are essential.
  • Clear communication skills in English (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Basic math skills for measurements (weight, volume, pressure).

Responsibilities

  • Start with concrete sampling and testing; expand to soils, asphalt, and masonry.
  • Receive paid, on-the-job training and support for ACI and ICC certifications.
  • Outdoor work environment year-round, with varying sites and crews.
  • Perform field and lab tests; maintain equipment and prepare accurate reports.
  • Conduct inspections per IBC codes and manage data using Metafield.

Looking to kickstart your career in construction? Join S&ME as an Entry‑Level Construction Materials Engineering Technician in Spartanburg, SC! You’ll be part of our Construction Services team, helping build projects that matter while learning and growing every step of the way.

What You Will Do

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you’ll start your days outdoors and take pride in hands‑on work that impacts the projects you work on. From day one you’ll be in the field gaining hands‑on experience and building a strong foundation for your career.

  • Start with the Basics: Begin with concrete sampling and testing, then expand into soils, asphalt, and masonry as you grow.
  • Earn While You Learn: Receive paid, on‑the‑job training and support for certifications through ACI and ICC.
  • Outdoor Work Environment: Enjoy working outside year‑round in changing conditions, with new sites and crews keeping things fresh.
  • Testing & Documentation: Perform field and lab tests, maintain equipment, and ensure accurate, complete reporting.
  • Inspections & Standards: Conduct inspections per IBC codes, document findings, and manage data using Metafield.

Experience shifting weekly work hours based on project needs and weather conditions, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half).

Qualifications
  • Education: High School diploma/GED
  • Certifications: Curiosity and willingness to learn; obtaining certifications is part of your growth.
  • Key Competencies:
    • A strong work ethic and a team mindset
    • Strong attention to detail and effective communication skills in English, including speaking, reading, and writing
    • Basic math skills with an understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
    • The understanding of a fluctuating schedule and occasional travel
    • Have a valid United States driver’s license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) for driving in the US, with an acceptable driving record
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to operate a company‑assigned vehicle safely (Truck or SUV)
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40‑50 lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out‑of‑town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
