S&ME is seeking Construction Materials Engineering Technicians for our Construction Services group in Columbia, SC. This role involves performing essential field and lab testing on construction materials, coupled with opportunities for mentorship and career advancement. Qualifications

  • 0-2 years relevant experience for Associate Technician/Technician I.

S&ME is searching for motivated and hard‑working Construction Materials Engineering Technicians at all experience levels to join our Construction Services group in Columbia, South Carolina.

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring construction projects—from local eateries to major sports venues—are built with quality and safety at the forefront. Whether you’re new to the field or bring years of expertise, you’ll receive hands‑on training, mentorship, and opportunities to advance. Seasoned professionals can take on leadership roles, guiding projects and mentoring colleagues.

Your Day-to-Day:
  • Field & Lab Testing: Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
  • Sample Collection & Prep: Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
  • Data Interpretation & Reporting: Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
  • Team Collaboration & Compliance: Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.

Experience shifting work hours based on project demands and weather, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half). Occasional travel to support other offices is covered with per diem and lodging.

What You Bring:

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels.

  • Associate Technician/Technician I: 0‑2 years relevant experience
  • Technician II: 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
  • Technician III: 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
  • Technician IV: 5+ years of relevant experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus

Active Industry certifications such as:

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)

Strong English communication skills (verbal and written); basic math proficiency, including an understanding of measurements and units of weight; the understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel.

Compensation and technician level will be based on experience and industry certifications.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40‑50 lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
