Overview

R&D Technician I

Salary: $45,000 - $50,000 Annually

A Day in the Life

Do you enjoy hands-on work and learning how things function at a fundamental level? As an R&D Lab Technician I in our Concrete Laboratory, your day will begin with raw materials and end with meaningful test results that contribute to real-world innovation.

You'll collaborate closely with experienced technicians and engineers to prepare, test, and evaluate various concrete and mortar mixes. From casting samples to running compressive strength tests, you’ll be a key part of a team working to improve the quality and performance of concrete materials.

Responsibilities

• Weigh and mix trial batches of concrete and mortar based on provided formulations

• Cast and cure test specimens in accordance with ASTM/AASHTO standards

• Conduct plastic and hardened concrete testing, including slump, air content, compressive and flexural strength

• Prepare samples using grinding and measuring tools to meet testing tolerances

• Maintain lab equipment, curing tanks, drying rooms, and workstations

• Accurately record and document test results for review and analysis

• Support ongoing research projects and assist with new mix designs

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required

• 0–2 years of lab, field, or construction materials experience

• Interest in materials science, construction, or quality control

• Willingness to obtain certifications such as ACI or IDOT (support provided)

• Ability to lift up to 55 lbs. and perform physical tasks throughout the day

• Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a team-focused mindset
