Job summary

Outokumpu Chrome Oy in Calvert, Alabama, is seeking an Entry Laboratory Technician to join the Quality team.

The role involves performing chemical analyses of stainless-steel samples, sample prep per ISO 17025, operating lab equipment, and adhering to safety guidelines; rotating day/night shifts.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma/GED minimum; 2-year Associate degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or Chemistry is preferred
  • Previous experience as materials tester or metallographer is required
  • Experience in laboratory, and/or quality control/assurance inspection
  • Ability to calibrate and adjust instruments
  • Competencies with Microsoft Office, SAP, NiCo

Responsibilities

  • Sample preparation and operation of testing equipment
  • Perform chemical tests according to ASTM and ISO 17025 standards
  • Support interpretation of test results
  • Laboratory housekeeping
  • Participate in SOP audits and development of procedures

We are looking for anEntry Laboratory Technician and be part of our Quality team in Calvert, Mobile County, Alabama.

Objective: perform laboratory activities under the guidance of a 1st or Laboratory Technician. Performs chemical analysis of stainless-steel samples including sample preparation according to ISO 17025 standards. Operates Laboratory equipment adhering to safety guidelines.

This position requires working rotating shifts, including both 2 weeks day and 2 weeks night shifts.


Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma/GED minimum; 2-year Associate degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or Chemistry is preferred
  • Previous experiencie as materials tester, or metallographer is required
  • Experience in laboratory, and/or quality control/ assurance inspection
  • Ability to calibrate and adjust to proper settings the various tools and instruments.
  • Functional level competency and proficiency skills with Microsoft Office, SAP, NiCo
  • Knowledge of use and routine maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Some of the activities you will be doing:

  • Sample preparation and operates testing equipment. Navigate LIMS to register samples.
  • Perform different chemical tests according to ASTM and ISO 17025 standards.
  • Support the interpretation of test results.
  • Perform housekeeping in the lab.
  • Participate in SOP audits the development of the testing procedures.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards
  • Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs and ramps) same as ability to walk long distances and demonstrate good balance on uneven terrain or maneuvering obstacles
  • Climb stairs/ladders and work at heights up to 100 feet above ground.
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat
  • Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, vibrations, dust and asphalt
  • Ability to work in areas with strong magnetic fields
  • Bend, twist, lift, stand, walk, reach, see, move, and hear as required by specific position
  • Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work including lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. utilizing proper lifting techniques
