Job description

Frontier Tutoring is how Alaskans get ahead.

Founded in 2008 by students at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Frontier Tutoring has grown into Anchorage’s largest educational support provider. Through academic tutoring, SAT/ACT prep, and college admission counseling, we help students build confidence, master challenging material, and move toward the futures they want.

We’re part of North Star Tutors Inc., Alaska’s largest educational support services brand, supporting students in communities across the state.

But just as importantly: we’re a people-first workplace. We work hard, we help each other out, we celebrate wins together, and yes, we do team lunches and karaoke nights. We take our mission seriously without taking ourselves too seriously.

The Role

We’re hiring Tutoring Specialists to work with students in the following areas:

  • English — Elementary, Middle, and High School

Frontier Tutoring works with students from elementary school through college, and the subjects and levels you teach will depend on your experience, expertise, and interests.

At its core, this job is about building a connection with a student and helping them make progress. We believe finding the right tutor is a lot like finding the right therapist: subject knowledge matters, but so does personality, communication style, and the relationship you build with the student.

We’re looking for people who know their subject well, enjoy explaining things, and genuinely like working with students.

Tutoring Specialists have a lot of control over their own availability, and we match students with tutors based on subject expertise, personality, and scheduling. Hours vary depending on student demand and are not guaranteed.

We’re looking for tutors who can work with us throughout the academic year. We do not hire for summer-only positions.

This position is especially well suited to current UAA students and recent graduates, though we welcome applications from qualified candidates from other backgrounds as well.

What You’ll Do

Your work will include things like:

  • Providing one-on-one and, occasionally, small-group instruction
  • Getting to know your students and adapting your teaching style to how they learn best
  • Helping students set goals and develop a plan for reaching them
  • Communicating with parents about student progress
  • Coordinating scheduling and other routine matters with students, families, and our team
  • Completing lesson notes and other brief administrative reports
  • Checking and responding to work-related emails and messages within 24 hours
  • Participating in company meetings, training, and professional development
  • Representing Frontier Tutoring professionally when working with students and families
What We’re Looking For

Our ideal tutor is someone who:

  • Has strong knowledge of the subjects they want to teach
  • Can explain difficult ideas in more than one way
  • Enjoys working individually with students
  • Is patient, encouraging, and able to build rapport
  • Communicates professionally with students, parents, and coworkers
  • Is dependable and follows through on commitments
  • Is comfortable working independently while still being part of a larger team
  • Is comfortable learning and using technology

Previous tutoring or teaching experience is helpful, but we’re also interested in candidates who have developed teaching skills through mentoring, coaching, peer instruction, or similar experiences.

A general familiarity with Anchorage schools and curriculum is helpful but not required.

A Quick Note About Tutoring at Frontier

Being an excellent student doesn’t automatically make someone an excellent tutor.

We’re looking for people who enjoy the process of helping someone else understand something—not just people who happen to be good at the subject themselves.

Some students will grasp a concept immediately. Others may need you to explain the same idea three different ways before something clicks. Great tutors are curious about why a student is struggling and are willing to adjust their approach until they find something that works.

That adaptability is a big part of what makes someone successful here.

Experience & Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Demonstrated strength in the subjects and grade levels you are applying to teach
  • Experience tutoring, teaching, mentoring, coaching, or otherwise helping others learn is preferred
  • Comfort using computers and learning new software
  • At least one year of customer-facing experience is preferred

Applicants may be asked to provide transcripts or proof of enrollment in or graduation from an accredited college or university when relevant to the subjects they will teach.

SAT/ACT Prep

Our standards for test-prep instructors are intentionally high. To teach SAT or ACT preparation at Frontier Tutoring, you must demonstrate the ability to score in the 99th percentile on the corresponding section of the exam. You do not need to arrive already knowing our test-prep curriculum. We provide training on our instructional approach, strategies, materials, and program structure.

If you’re excited about this role but don’t meet every single bullet point, we still encourage you to apply. We care far more about your curiosity, work ethic, and how you show up for your team than about checking every box.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Frontier Tutoring LLC is an equal-opportunity employer. We are committed to providing a workplace where everyone is treated with respect and fairness.

Employment decisions are made based on merit, qualifications, availability, and ability. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, citizenship, age, sex, disability, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy, parenthood, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, caste, or any other legally protected status.

Safety is a top priority at Frontier Tutoring. This background check will include federal, state, and local criminal records checks, a sex offender registry check, and a domestic watchlist check. Employees may be required to submit to additional background checks or verifications at any point during their employment.

Frontier Tutoring is a fully compliant company with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act ("ICPA") 25 USC §3207. Under the ICPA, the company must ensure that all employees, contractors, and/or volunteers providing tutoring services have not been convicted of, or plead guilty, no contest or nolo contendere to, any crime of violence, any felonious offense, or any of two or more misdemeanor offenses, under federal, state, or tribal law involving crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact or prostitution, crimes against persons, or offenses committed against children. No applicants will be considered who do not meet this standard or who will not submit to a full background check.
