Position Title: English Teacher (High School)

Summary: Under the general supervision of the School Director, to develop students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, foster communication skills, develop an understanding and appreciation of literature of all types, motivate students to read a wide variety of publications to derive information, comprehend and critically assess the reading materials, and to promote the development of skills in the field of English reading, grammar and syntax.

Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  2. New Jersey Standard Teaching Certification (CE, CEAS) with subject matter specialization: English Language Arts.
  3. Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  5. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  6. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  7. Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  8. Knowledge of grade specific school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught.
  9. Understand the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school related matters.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work; parents, students and faculty etc.

Prior to employment, the following must be addressed:

  1. Required to complete a criminal history background check to prove that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense in accordance with N.J.S.A 18A:6-7.1.
  2. Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:32-6.2.
  3. Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6A:32-6.3.
  4. Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the CEO finds appropriate and acceptable.
Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

The English Language Arts teacher:

  1. Administers English education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  2. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  3. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  4. Teaches knowledge and skills in English grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary and proper word usage, word denotations and connotations, creative writing, independent thinking, communication and speaking.
  5. Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions on a variety of reading materials, including the mass media, and a wide range of literature.
  6. Works with students and others to prepare materials for inclusion in literary publications, contests, etc.
  7. Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  8. Maintains familiarity with district and New Jersey State standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests.
  9. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  10. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  11. Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  12. Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  13. Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  14. Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the School Director and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Qualifications Profile:
  1. Must hold a NJ Certification with Subject Matter Specialization: Language Arts or Teacher of English.
  2. Education: Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignments.
  3. Masters’ Degree preferred.
  4. Experience: Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
  5. Equipment: Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
  6. Travel Requirements: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards: Works in standard office and school building environments.
