Job description

Hennepin County Public Works is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician to join the Design division within the Transportation Project Delivery department. This position offers opportunities for professional and technical growth through training and collaboration with experienced roadway design professionals.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid, performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340, and remotely as required. Note: No public transportation access. Work hours are flexible between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) is in-person in downtown Minneapolis, with details provided upon hire.

This is a full-time, benefit-earning position, internally classified as an Engineering Technician, Principal. View the job classification specification.

In this position, you will:

  1. Direct, train, and oversee the work of other technicians to ensure deadlines are met.
  2. Design and review roadway elements for complex projects, including utility plans, alignment sheets, removal, construction, profiles, intersections, staging, erosion control, turf establishment, and cross sections.
  3. Coordinate with utilities, agencies, residents, and other departments.
  4. Develop expertise in roadway design, from preliminary to final stages.
  5. Support other technicians by applying roadway design criteria, including geometric layouts, construction sections, surface modeling, drainage, standards, specifications, and cost estimates.
  6. Assist in developing federal and state required documents.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Eight years of relevant technical experience or equivalent certifications such as CST Level 4, LS, GISP, or LSIT, with substitutions available.
  • Completion of relevant technical training or coursework may substitute experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Experience designing and reviewing roadway plans.
  • Leadership in work teams and collaboration across departments.
  • Proficiency with CAD software and interpreting engineering documents.
  • Knowledge of traffic and civil engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships, prioritize tasks, and work independently or in teams.
