Job Title: Engineering Technician II

Job Description

The Engineering Technician II supports a major data center project with a primary focus on soils testing and certification during the initial phase. This role performs field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel, while ensuring strict adherence to safety and quality standards. Responsibilities
  • Perform field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel in accordance with established procedures and training.
  • Conduct soils testing and certification activities during the initial phase of the data center project, ensuring compliance with project specifications and standards.
  • Document testing procedures, observations, and results clearly and accurately in both written and digital formats for daily transmittal to the Project Manager.
  • Perform basic analysis of test data to verify accuracy and completeness before submitting results to the Project Manager.
  • Communicate effectively with the Project Manager, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractor representatives, and other project stakeholders regarding site conditions, project requirements, and testing and inspection results.
  • Transport material samples to the laboratory, ensuring proper labeling and documentation for further testing and analysis.
  • Assist higher‑level technicians with complex testing, inspection, and observation tasks as directed.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, including calibration, cleanliness, and readiness for use, and ensure vehicles and work areas remain clean and organized.
  • Follow all safety rules, policies, and project‑specific safety requirements, and perform pre‑task planning prior to executing work.
  • Identify and report any safety issues or concerns to management promptly.
  • Assist with scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites when needed to support project demands.
  • Maintain quality standards on all projects by adhering to established procedures, documenting work accurately, and supporting continuous improvement efforts.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4-10 years of relevant experience in construction materials testing or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of training and related experience.
  • Strong experience in soils testing, with the ability to perform and document soils‑related field and laboratory procedures.
  • Proficiency in using a laptop computer and working with Microsoft Word and Excel for data entry, reporting, and documentation.
  • ACI certification in one or more of the following areas: Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I and/or Concrete Strength Testing Technician.
  • Certification in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
  • Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable violation history.
  • Ability to clearly document findings and results in both written and digital formats.
  • Ability to perform basic analysis of test data to verify accuracy prior to submittal.
  • Commitment to following safety rules, performing pre‑task planning, and maintaining high quality standards on all projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in one or more categories such as Asphalt, Concrete, or Soils.
  • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in one or more categories such as Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, or Generalist.
  • ICC certification in one or more categories including Reinforced Concrete, Spray‑applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post‑Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel - Bolting, or Structural Steel - Welding.
  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI).
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in more than one method such as Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), or Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
  • ACI certification beyond the minimum required, particularly in soils‑related areas.
  • Soils‑specific certifications and ICC soils certifications.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with construction materials testing in a data center or large infrastructure environment.
  • Preference for candidates local to the Roanoke, VA area or with strong familiarity with the region.
Work Environment

This role is based in Roanoke, Virginia and primarily supports a large data center project, with the initial phase focused on soils testing. The position involves a mix of field and laboratory work, including time on active construction sites and in materials testing laboratories. Technicians use laptops, Microsoft Word and Excel, nuclear density gauges, and other construction materials testing equipment, and are expected to maintain all equipment in clean, calibrated, and safe working condition. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Roanoke, VA.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.50 - $33.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.
