Responsibilities

  • Perform sampling and testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, and asphalt in field and lab.
  • Conduct concrete testing and soil testing to support quality assurance.
  • Transport samples to laboratory for testing and analysis.
  • Document field activities, test results, observations, and inspections using electronic reports.
  • Communicate with project personnel, clients, and contractor representatives regarding testing needs.
  • Work with project team to ensure specifications and quality requirements are followed.
  • Assist training and mentoring of junior staff as needed.
  • Maintain strong safety focus in all activities and follow procedures.
  • Read drawings and specifications to interpret testing requirements.
  • Demonstrate aptitude in using testing equipment and interpreting results.
  • Adapt to extended or nontraditional hours as schedules require.
  • Operate a vehicle safely to travel to sites and labs.

Job Title: Construction Materials Technician
Job Description

The Construction Materials Technician performs field and laboratory testing of construction materials, communicates effectively with project personnel and contractors, and documents all activities in a clear and timely manner. In this role, you transport samples to the laboratory for further analysis, support quality assurance efforts on a variety of projects, and help ensure that project specifications and requirements are consistently met. You receive in-depth technical training and industry certifications based on your experience and skill level, with strong opportunities for career advancement and growth. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors in varying weather conditions and is comfortable lifting 50 to 75 pounds while contributing to a fast-paced, highly successful project team.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine to complex sampling and testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, and asphalt in the field and laboratory.
  • Conduct concrete testing, concrete inspection, soil testing, and other construction materials testing to support project quality assurance.
  • Transport collected samples to the laboratory for further testing and analysis in a timely and safe manner.
  • Provide clear and accurate documentation of field activities, test results, observations, and inspections using electronic daily reports.
  • Communicate effectively with project personnel, materials technicians, clients, and contractor representatives regarding construction activities, project requirements, and testing and inspection needs.
  • Work closely with the project team and lead technicians to ensure that project specifications, standards, and quality requirements are followed.
  • Assist with training and mentoring of junior staff as needed, sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
  • Maintain a strong safety focus in all field and laboratory activities, following established safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Use excellent plan reading skills to interpret drawings and specifications relevant to testing and inspection activities.
  • Demonstrate technical aptitude in using testing equipment, interpreting results, and troubleshooting issues that arise during field or laboratory work.
  • Adapt to extended or nontraditional working hours as project schedules and field conditions require.
  • Operate a vehicle safely to travel to project sites and laboratories, maintaining a good driving record.
Essential Skills
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of construction materials testing experience.
  • Experience with construction materials testing, including soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, and asphalt.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Certification.
  • Strong safety focus and attention to detail in both field and laboratory environments.
  • Excellent plan reading skills for interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude for performing and understanding materials testing procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with project teams, clients, and contractors and for preparing clear documentation.
  • Ability to work extended or nontraditional hours as needed to meet project demands.
  • Ability to comfortably lift 50 to 75 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving history.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • MnDOT certifications are a plus.
  • ICC certifications are a plus.
  • Experience in concrete testing, concrete inspection, and soil testing.
  • Background in quality assurance related to construction materials.
  • Experience working as part of a fast-paced project team.
  • Interest in obtaining additional industry certifications and technical training.
Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based with regular work outdoors in varying weather conditions at active construction sites, supplemented by time in the laboratory for further testing and analysis of collected samples. You work with a variety of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, and asphalt, using industry-standard testing equipment and electronic systems for daily reporting and documentation. The position may require extended or nontraditional working hours depending on project schedules and site conditions. The environment is fast paced, with a steady and growing backlog of projects that offer continuous learning and advancement opportunities. You are expected to follow all safety procedures, maintain a strong safety focus, and dress appropriately for field work and laboratory activities, including suitable attire and protective gear as required.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Monroe, LA.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
