Job summary

The City of Syracuse is seeking an experienced electrical inspector to ensure conformity of electrical installations with current codes and local regulations. You will review plans, conduct field inspections, and enforce compliance for commercial and residential projects.

Residency is required; six months from hire to establish residency. Special licensing of Master Electrician and Alarm certification must be completed within six months of appointment.

Qualifications

• Associates Degree in electrical construction or related field with 4 years of electrical installation experience.
• Alternative: 6 years of electrical installation experience with at least 1 year in Fire Protection Alarm Systems.
• Equivalent mix of training and experience as defined by (A) and (B).

Responsibilities

• Perform technical inspections for conformity to plans and ordinances.
• Inspect existing wiring, note condition and safety for continued use.
• Conduct field inspections of electrical wiring and Fire Alarm Protection System installations.
• Investigate complaints and issue violation notices to owners.
• Explain building code requirements to contractors and the general public.
• Maintain records and prepare inspection reports.

Job Description

The work involves responsibility for performing technical work inspecting electrical installations to determine and ensure conformity to required specifications and compliance with local and state electrical code requirements. Duties require technical examination and the application of electrical trade practices use in inspection work. Assignments are generated by the receipt of building permits, certificate of compliance applications, complaints and referrals. The employee in this class deals with the public and must use tact and judgement in maintaining such relationships. This class is responsible for conducting plan reviews and inspections of Electronic Fire Protection Alarm Systems. General supervision is received from an administrative superior. This class does not exercise supervision but may assist in on site and in-house electrical training for new employees. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

• Performs technical inspections on electrical wiring, connections and fixtures in the process of construction or repair for compliance with approved plans, specifications and present ordinances/laws.
• Inspects existing wiring and fixtures, noting general condition and safety for continued use.
• Conducts field inspections of commercial and industrial electrical wiring and electronic Fire Alarm Protection System installations.
• Investigates complaints of defective or inadequate wiring and issues violation notices to owners of buildings with such conditions.
• Explains requirements of state and city building codes to contractors and the general public.
• Maintains records and issues reports on inspection activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of modern practices, principles, materials and tools used in electrical installation.
• Good knowledge of all current codes, regulations and laws governing electrical installation.
• Working knowledge of Fire Protection Alarm Systems and their installation, including Syracuse Electrical Code, National Electrical Code and National Fire Prevention Code.
• Ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions created by deterioration or faulty installation.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical construction specifications and plans, and to recognize deviation from such plans in the construction process.
• Ability to keep accurate records and prepare concise reports.

Minimum Qualifications

• A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associates Degree in electrical construction or electrical technology or a closely related field and four (4) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in electrical installation or related work in which the major job function must have involved the application of electrical codes to the construction, installation, repair or maintenance of electrical systems, one (1) year of which must have involved the installation, maintenance and repair to Fire Protection Alarm Systems; or,
• B) Six (6) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in electrical installation or related work in which the major job function must have involved the application of electrical codes to the construction, installation, repair or maintenance of electrical systems, one (1) year of which must have involved the installation, maintenance and repair to Fire Protection Alarm Systems; or,
• C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B)

Special Necessary Requirement

Within six (6) months of appointment must successfully complete the licensing examination for a Master Electrician and Special Alarm certification.
