Description of Work

This posting is for an Engineering Technician I in the Salisbury Construction office. This position performs technical duties supporting engineers and other professionals in areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials testing, materials sampling, erosion control inspection, and construction traffic control audits on assigned projects. Work duties may include inspection for compliance and/or code, collection and analysis of field data, testing of materials, reviewing and interpreting design plans, and analyzing engineering related data and/or product data. Duties may also include construction layout, measuring, staking, marking, and clearing brush. This position will perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software.
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
  • Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience

Additional Expectations

Applicants will be required to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components. Employees in this position may be exposed to high traffic volumes, may work at heights over water or traffic, and may have to climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. This position must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the bush axe and other tools on steep and rough terrain. This position is expected to carry testing equipment over rough and steep terrain. This position will be required to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. The successful applicant for this position is expected to safely work high above ground, safely operate a motor vehicle, be proficient in record keeping, and engineering testing equipment.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Safety-toed shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
