Job description

Do you enjoy designing and constructing public infrastructure? The City of West Allis is looking for a dedicated Engineering Technician to join our team. This role is ideal for detail-oriented individuals who thrive in both office and field settings, assisting with municipal projects that shape our community.

Responsibilities:

1. Inspects construction projects for compliance with plans, specifications, safety and accepted engineering practices.
2. Maintains records of types of materials, quantities, costs and change orders involved in contract work.
3. Performs CAD drafting work from notes and sketches on engineering projects.
4. Determines quality of trenching, shoring, backfilling and compaction as well as quantity and quality of concrete, asphalt and other materials.
5. Coordinates inspection activities between contractors, public utilities and public works engineers.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, or equivalent combination of recent training and relevant paid work experience.
2. Experience on a survey crew, as inspector on heavy construction projects such as pavements and underground utilities, or as draftsperson responsible for the preparation of designs, detailed drawings, studies or preliminary plans.
3. 5-10 years of recent engineering technician work experience including engineering field work and engineering office work experience for a municipality, public works organization or equivalent.
4. Ability to utilize software in accordance with the needs of the department.
5. Demonstrated proficiency in Microstation/AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite programs - including Microsoft Outlook (mail, calendar, tasks), Word (templates, forms, mail merge, reviewing) and Excel; and Adobe Acrobat. Advanced skills in math and English writing/grammar skills.
6. Experience working with groups of people from diverse backgrounds.
