The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system includes 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed extending 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) manages the operation and maintenance of facilities related to sewage treatment within the five boroughs. This includes 14 wastewater treatment plants, sludge dewatering facilities, collection facilities (pumping stations, overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates), wastewater laboratories, and harbor vessels.
Under supervision, the selected candidate will perform sampling and investigation of industrial firms, sewage treatment plants, and stormwater to verify compliance with standards. Responsibilities include calibrating, programming, installing, and maintaining sampling and monitoring equipment such as Auto-samplers, pH meters, flow meters, velocity meters, and multi-parameter devices. The candidate will collect, preserve, transport, and deliver samples to laboratories, conduct pre-investigation of industrial firms, and prepare drawings for permit renewal. Additional duties include filling out Chain-of-Custody forms, vehicle reports, daily reports, reviewing and interpreting drawings and specifications, performing inspections and dye-tests, and participating in source identification for dry-weather discharges. The role also involves preparing reports and maintaining records.
Fieldwork may require walking, climbing ladders, standing for long periods, bending, carrying equipment, and working outdoors in various weather conditions, with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
One year of experience credit is given for each 30 semester credits towards an engineering technology degree from an accredited college. All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
For certain positions, a valid Motor Vehicle Driver License in New York State is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ArcGIS software.
