Socket.dev in Grand Rapids, MI is seeking an Electrical Documentation Technician to support accurate BOM management and schematic integrity in a fast-paced environment.

You will review BOM entries, verify device tags and cable identifiers, and perform cross-reference checks to ensure signal continuity across schematics. Collaboration with EE/CE teams will drive standardization and ongoing quality improvements.

Qualifications

  • Must have a 2-year technical degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
  • Strong ability to read electrical schematics and BOMs.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with AutoCAD Electrical and EPLAN is a plus.
  • Familiar with ERP systems; BAAN is a plus.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 79, IEC, UL508A electrical standards.
  • Experience with PLCs, HMIs, sensors and drives.
  • Knowledge of wiring practices and panel layout design.
  • Experience with schematic checking tools or automated validation software is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

Job description

Accountabilities

  • Review and validate BOM entries for accuracy and ERP compatibility.
  • Ensure device tags and cable identifiers are consistent across schematics and BOMs.
  • Perform cross-reference checks in electrical schematics to ensure signal continuity and accuracy.
  • Identify and flag missing or inconsistent components in prints or BOMs.
  • Collaborate with Electrical and Controls Engineers (EE/CEs) to implement standardization in documentation practices.

Support continuous improvement initiatives related to documentation and design quality.

Required competencies / experience / qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in technical documentation
  • 2-year technical degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with AutoCAD Electrical and EPLAN is a plus
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and bills of material
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (BAAN a plus)
  • Experience with electrical standards and codes (e.g., NFPA 79, IEC standards, UL508A)
  • Familiarity with control systems and industrial automation components (e.g., PLCs, HMIs, sensors, drives)
  • Familiarity with wiring practices and panel layout design
  • Experience with schematic checking tools or automated validation software a plus
  • Understanding of machine assembly and electrical panel construction in a custom equipment environment
  • Experience working in a cross-functional engineering environment
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Experience with version control systems or document management tools (e.g., Vault, Copia, SharePoint)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; advanced Excel skills (e.g., VBA) are a plus
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with digital twin or simulation tools is a plus
  • Experience supporting design reviews or quality audits
  • Willingness to travel domestically (0-10%) as needed
