  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in the design of electrical substations.
  • PE license highly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to organize multiple physical design assignments and competing priorities to deliver accurate products on time.
  • Experience managing physical design projects, including budgeting, scheduling and risk management.
  • Ability to collaborate in cross-functional work teams.
  • Experience creating and reviewing substation design drawings.
  • Proficiency with software applications used to perform substation design work.
  • Capability to work with remotely located team members.
  • Must pass post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol tests per Federal regulations.

Job Description

Orbital Engineering, Inc. is currently seeking an Engineering Supervisor – Physical Electrical to support our Substation Engineering group for a remote position. Primary responsibilities include leading a team of engineers and designers in the design, development, installation, and maintenance of electrical substations. Responsible for development of substation design packages for clients across the U.S. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution equipment upgrades to large transmission projects.

Essential Functions
  • Leadership and Team Management
  • Lead a small team of designers in the design, development, installation, and maintenance of electrical substations
  • Manage the execution of physical design projects of all sizes, including resource planning, risk management, and project delivery
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and manage career development for designers
  • Budget and Resource Management
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of cost estimates and schedules for physical design projects
  • Allocate direct reports effectively to meet project demands
  • Work closely with project managers and design managers to ensure that the portion of the project that is assigned is executed efficiently and to high standards
  • Discuss any staffing needs with design managers as they arise
  • Technical Expertise
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to direct reports, fostering professional growth and ensuring best practices are followed
  • Oversee the preparation of physical designs
  • Ensure the timely resolution of design issues, providing expert troubleshooting and problem‑solving support
  • Client and Stakeholder Interaction
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring strong communication and coordination throughout project lifecycles
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution and timely delivery of services
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals
  • Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations for electrical substations
  • Quality Assurance
  • Perform quality reviews of your direct report’s work
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize substation design, operation, and maintenance processes
  • Stay current on industry advancements, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes to maintain the company’s competitive edge

Qualifications

  • This position requires the ability to pass a post‑offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
Location Note

This is a remote position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s location.

Salary Range

$140,000-180,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
