Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Insurance, Office of State Fire Marshal, seeks an experienced Engineering Supervisor II to oversee statewide fire prevention inspections for state-owned properties and to ensure code compliance under the NC Fire Code.

The role leads inspection staff, coordinates emergency response readiness, and guides education, outreach, and investigations, with a schedule four 10-hour days and some on-call duties.

Qualifications

• Five years of fire prevention inspections experience (Levels I–III).
• Three years inspecting pyrotechnic operations on school or government property.
• NC Certifications as Building, Electrical, Mechanical & Plumbing Inspector III.
• NC FIT Certification and licensure as unlimited electrical and refrigeration contractor.

Responsibilities

• Oversee fire prevention inspections of state-owned property and equipment per NC Fire Code.
• Provide educational materials and speak at events; engage with associations.
• Coordinate fire investigations with FIU, SBI, ATF, and local departments.
• Deploy statewide for emergency response and manage SERT operations readiness.
• Lead implementation of inspection software and coordinate with IT/vendors.
