The Coteau Properties Company is offering an internship for students pursuing a four-year Mechanical Engineering degree. The program targets hands-on work at a surface lignite coal mine, with emphasis on using new technology and improved components to maximize production and reduce costs.

Interns will assist in planning preventive maintenance, coordinating tasks across maintenance and operations, and ensuring compliance with MSHA regulations and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of completion towards a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • In good academic standing.
  • Currently pursuing a four-year ME degree and will complete after the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to maintenance and operations with focus on cost reductions and increased production via new technology and improved components and design of surface mining equipment.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate preventive mechanical maintenance on major mining equipment.
  • Follow MSHA regulations and company safety procedures and environmental regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

Employee Type: Intern (Trainee)This program requires students currently pursuing a four-year Mechanical Engineering degree, who have completed a portion of their curriculum, and will be completing their program after the internship experience. This program is not designed for graduates. Work will be performed at a surface lignite coal mine.

Essential Duties
  • Provide technical support to the different maintenance and operations departments with a major focus on maximizing cost reductions and increased production through the application of new technology and improved components and design of surface mining equipment.

  • Responsible for performing engineering duties in planning, scheduling, and coordinating preventive mechanical maintenance work on all major pieces of mining equipment.

  • Perform duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures and state and federal environmental regulations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer applications is required.

    • Microsoft Office Applications

    • Drafting software, i.e. AutoCAD

  • Ability to handle confidential information.

Education and Training
  • At least one year of completion towards a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering is required.

  • In good academic standing.

May - August 2027 or May - December 2027

ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL DEMANDS FOR POSITION:
  • Intermittent: Kneeling, crouching, and crawling.

  • Occasionally (0-1/3 of workday): Climbing and balancing (entering and exiting equipment); stooping/bending; pinching 5 lbs.; gripping (holding tools) 40 lbs.; lifting, pushing, and pulling 50 lbs. (measuring tools and rolling steps); carrying 20 lbs.; and reaching overhead.

  • Frequently (1/3-2/3 of workday): Sitting, standing, and walking; reaching at waist level and handling objects; distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.

  • Continually (2/3-3/3 of workday): Fine finger dexterity and repetitive motions (computer use and hand measuring tools); hearing, speaking, and near vision.

NOTE: This position requires ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as at heights and elevated surfaces. Employees must be able to safely operate company vehicles/equipment as required. Employees may be exposed to high noise levels. Employees must be able to work while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to safety footwear, safety glasses, hard hat, and ear protection.
