Job summary

IKO Industries Ltd. is offering an Engineering & Safety Internship in Sumas, WA. The role provides hands‑on exposure to process engineering and HSE functions within a manufacturing setting.

You will work with engineers and safety professionals to develop JHAs and SWIs, support 5S initiatives, and contribute to operational improvements and data‑driven projects. Local Washington state students pursuing engineering or safety degrees are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline.
• Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
• Strong written communication skills with an interest in technical documentation.
• Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Experience reading or working with engineering drawings and P&IDs is an asset.
• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or 5S principles is an asset.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

• Working alongside Process Engineers and HSE professionals to support plant safety and operational improvement initiatives.
• Assisting with the development and maintenance of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Safe Work Instructions (SWIs).
• Creating JHAs and SWIs for new and existing equipment.
• Supporting the plant's 5S continuous improvement program through audits, documentation, and improvement initiatives.
• Identifying opportunities to improve workplace organization, efficiency, and safety.
• Assisting with equipment labeling projects, including safety, maintenance, and process identification systems.
• Supporting P&ID reviews and updates to ensure plant documentation remains accurate and current.
• Conducting plant walkthroughs to identify safety, process, and operational improvement opportunities.
• Collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to support engineering and safety projects.
• Collaborating with operations, maintenance, engineering, and HSE teams on various special projects.
• Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
