Job summary

The State of Delaware's Maintenance & Operations division seeks an Engineering/Planning/Surveying Technician II to perform field construction inspection, measure and pay contract quantities, and ensure work meets DelDOT specifications and standards. The role may involve investigating maintenance issues and creating work orders, with hours that include nights, weekends, or extended shifts and hazard pay.

Qualifications

  • Six months experience in applied mathematical computations including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Six months experience in interpreting construction plans and details, schematics or technical drawings.
  • Six months experience in interpreting boundary plats.
  • Knowledge of surveying which includes collecting survey data for boundary, mapping, topographic, hydrographic, engineering, and construction surveys.
  • Knowledge of using and maintaining surveying tools and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Responsibilities

  • Inspects infrastructures to ensure compliance with design plans, materials specifications, safety requirements, construction processes, local, state, and federal codes and on-going maintenance requirements; documents and reports compliance or deficiencies.
  • Designs, develops, or reviews engineering project or site layouts, alignments, profiles, studies, graphs, and other related activities.
  • Compiles and records notes, sketches, test results, inspection data, and other information to document compliance and/or develop designs, specifications, reports, maps, and other geographically based data.
  • Conducts various studies to be used by others to analyze needs or develop plans, record characteristics, and other related activities.
  • Conducts data analysis to determine accuracy of data collected, develop recommendations, develop corrective designs, and/or ensure compliance.
  • Tests or evaluates the quality of materials or designs to verify adherence to contracts and specifications.
  • Obtains survey data such as angles, elevations, points, and contours using electronic distance measuring equipment and other surveying instruments.
  • Calculates or measures area and volume dimensions, horizontal and vertical geometry, profile and component specifications, and material testing dimensions using calculators or computers.
  • Operates computer assisted drafting equipment or other tools of the trade and uses automated information systems and computer software to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, and report on data.
  • Reads and interprets plans, specification, blueprints, and other engineering documents.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Introduction

The mission of Maintenance & Operations is to provide excellence in transportation by keeping the state's road transportation network in a state of good repair through the careful and consistent application of personnel, equipment and financial resources.

Summary Statement

The primary duty of this position is performing field construction inspection for the Canal Districts Contracts Section. The successful candidate will be expected to measure and pay for contract quantities and ensure that work is being done to DelDOT Specifications and Standards. Additionally, the position will be expected to investigate maintenance issues and potentially create work orders to address. This position will be expected to work Contractor’s hours which can be nights, weekends, or extended hours. Plus Hazard Pay.

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.

All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.
