The Facilities Engineering Mechanic is responsible for performing stationary engineering duties in the central boiler and chiller plants. They perform maintenance tasks including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and respond to facilities emergencies. The mechanic also performs preventive maintenance on mechanical systems and communicates with supervisors and emergency services as needed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate the boiler and chiller plants, including managing the building automation system, starting/stopping equipment, and controlling pumps and compressors.
- Perform preventive maintenance in the boiler and chiller plants.
- Respond to fire alarms, investigate, and coordinate emergency responses.
- Assist with systems like door alarms, nurse call, and TV systems.
- Address issues in the hospital’s pneumatic tube system and coordinate with vendors.
- Investigate and restore power issues, perform simple electrical repairs.
- Replace lamps and conduct lighting maintenance.
- Investigate and repair leaks, assist with water/floor cleanup.
- Unclog drains and fixtures as needed.
- Address HVAC temperature and ventilation complaints.
- Respond to elevator failures, initiate rescues, and coordinate repairs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Valid Maryland 1st-grade stationary engineer’s license and a high school diploma or GED.
- At least five years of relevant experience; healthcare experience preferred.
- Maryland Class C driver’s license.
- Analytical skills for routine and emergency situations.
- Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
- Proficiency with electronic devices for work tracking.
- Customer service skills with patients and visitors.
Physical, Mental, and Visual Abilities
- Lifting over 50 lbs.
- Pushing/pulling equipment over 50 lbs.
- Climbing ladders, scaffolding, ramps.
- Stooping, bending, reaching, grasping.
- Operating hand and power tools.
- Walking/standing for long periods.
Working Conditions
- Work with equipment where carelessness could cause minor injuries.
